  • Publication number: 20120144055
Abstract: A bit stream analyzer may detect a bitstream representing a streamed content file that is being streamed from a streaming server to a client over a network connection. An encoding rate extractor may determine an encoding rate of the bitstream, and a bit rate extractor may determine a transfer bit rate at which the bitstream is being streamed. A pause calculator may determine a minimum wait time experienced at the client during which playback of the streamed content file is paused, based on the encoding rate and the transfer bit rate.

  • Publication number: 20110238762
Abstract: Some techniques feature a computer-implemented method for messages associated with a user location. The method involves determining, by a mobile computing device, an estimated geographic location of the mobile computing device. The method includes receiving, at the mobile computing device, one or more messages associated with an area within the estimated geographic location, where the one or more messages include messages posted by users of a system that associates messages that those users posted about the area within the estimated geographic location. The method involves providing, on a display of the mobile computing device, one or more posted message icons that are presented in a layer over a map, where the one or more posted message icons represent the one or more posted messages. In a system, the one or more posted messages may not appear on mobile devices after a predetermined amount of time from their respective postings.

  • Publication number: 20110004587
Abstract: A method and an apparatus search for documents in a data memory. A search query and a set of documents stored in the data memory are prescribed. For each document in the set of documents a respective computer-evaluatable description of the document is generated. The document is broken down into document portions. For each document portion at least one result of deciphering of the document portion is ascertained, wherein for at least one document portion a plurality of deciphering results are ascertained and stored. For each document in the set of documents a measure of the match between the document and the search query is calculated. For calculating the measure of match between a document and the search query, a degree of match is calculated for each stored possible deciphering result. The calculated degrees of match are taken as a basis for selecting at least one document in the set.

  • Publication number: 20090180731
Abstract: A photonic coupler including a substrate, first and second waveguides disposed along a longitudinal direction of the substrate for propagation of respective first and second optical signals along the longitudinal direction, and a coupling region between the first and second waveguides and including a medium of a refractive index different from the first and second waveguides. The coupling region has a width extending from the first waveguide to the second waveguide and a breadth extending laterally to form an angle to the longitudinal direction for frustrated total internal reflection of the first optical signal at an interface between the coupling region and the first waveguide.

  • Publication number: 20070027957
Abstract: A P2P network of digital recorders is queried about the presence of particular content that relates to a recorded broadcast program. • Patent number: 7149660
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for standardizing an interface infrastructure between sensor devices and client applications. The apparatus comprises a Sensor Application Integration Framework (SAIF) in the form of an application program interface (API) transport layer between sensor devices and client applications. Sensor services are registered in the SAIF API as interface definitions, and the client applications search the interface definitions corresponding to desired sensor services. An interactive handshake of messages and data between client applications and sensor services is implemented via the SAIF API by means of standard communication protocols such as XML. The SAIF API abstracts the details of the underlying sensor hardware from the client application, and can therefore function as a standard interface for sensor simulation, for sensor emulation, and for an active sensor device.

  • Publication number: 20060190427
Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for more efficient searching peer to peer networks for data. Large peer to peer networks comprise millions of peer clients, or just briefly peers, having enormous amounts of data objects available. Searching all peers takes a lot of time, therefore a small group—private network—is formed within the peer to peer network. Peers for this private network are selected when they satisfy at least on criterion. This criterion relates to for example subscriptions of the peer to data delivery services or to the search query. The private network or networks may be formed upon start-up of the apparatus according to the invention or even right after submitting a search query.
