  • Patent number: 4422680
Abstract: Disclosed is an energy absorbing bumper formed of curved sections manufactured by pultrusion. The sections have perpendicular borders whose raised edges are connected by closure plates in areas of high stress. The face of the section can be formed with ripples so as to insure that reinforcing wires remain in areas subjected to high stresses.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 3, 1981
Date of Patent: December 27, 1983
Assignee: Regie Nationale des Usines Renault
    Inventor: Marcel Goupy
  • Patent number: 4354700
Abstract: A pseudo-resilient bumper or shield attachment for attaching a bumper or shield to a vehicle is disclosed. The attachment is made up of a vertically extending elastically resilient counter-fitting having one end attached to the chassis of the vehicle and another end to which an inelastically deformable energy absorbing block is attached. The energy absorbing block is attached between the vertically extending counter-fitting and the bumper or shield, and includes collapsible energy absorbing thin walled partitions extending perpendicular to the resilient counter-fitting.

  • Patent number: 4278282
Abstract: An elastic guard brace for attaching bumpers to an automobile is disclosed. The brace consists of a relatively thick elastic member which is connected between the bumper and the automobile and is oriented so that the direction of its elasticity is parallel to the direction of a force acting on the bumper. At least one inelastic member is positioned within the elastic member and is oriented parallel to the direction of the force acting on the bumper so that it can buckle in an inelastic manner and absorb energy upon impact. The elasticity of the elastic member minimizes the inelastic deformation of the elastic element and returns the bumper to its original position.

    Inventors: Pierre Roubinet, Marcel Goupy
  • Patent number: 4252355
Abstract: A composite bumper structure is made up of an elongated molded bumper section, molded attachment lugs and energy absorbers. The bumper section is integrally molded with the lugs and both contain elongated reinforcement fibers. The energy of a collision is absorbed both by the deformation of the energy absorbers and the elastic deformation of the lugs. The bumper section may also support a stylistic facade.

  • Patent number: 4154469
Abstract: The energy absorbing device for use as a composite bumper on a vehicle comprises a deformable unit providing a constant energy absorption, the unit being disposed in contact with a resisting structure and a flexible shield, and consisting of a number of energy absorbing members, each energy absorbing member being formed by the juxtaposition of a plurality of elongated hollow members having different lengths. Provision is made within the energy absorbing device of sections having an increasing impact resistance as the impact stress causes the energy absorbing device to be crushed, the stiffness of the energy absorbing device being thus enhanced as a function of the driving in thereof.

  • Patent number: 4101983
Abstract: A protective helmet for use particularly by the rider of a two-wheeled vehicle, having an upper rigid shell joined to a semi-rigid shell of plastic material, the latter having extensions over the regions of a wearer's ears. An interior shock absorbing element is composed of two parts, the upper part extending frontwardly and rearwardly as far as the lower part, which is ring-like in form and extends around the entire lower interior part of the head, to provide protection in the rear.

  • Patent number: 4029350
Abstract: This invention relates to an energy absorbing device intended to be used as a composite bumper. Said bumper comprises an energy absorbing beam, a deformable unit comprising at least two energy absorbing members located between the beam and the vehicle chassis, said beam being supported by said members, and a flexible shield wrapping either both aforesaid constituting units or a portion thereof.
