  • Publication number: 20240319249
Abstract: A method (and corresponding apparatus) of analyzing the behavior of an electrochemical double layer (EDL) by replacing a classic capacitor in an astable multivibrator circuit with an electrochemical cell. By pushing the EDL into resonance, the induced charging and discharging of the double layer results in a square waveform output that has a characteristic frequency audible to the human ear. Variations in the electrolyte concentration and identity yield distinct frequencies. The method provides sensory insight into EDL rearrangement and behavior with an apparatus that is simple and robust. The apparatus allows the analysis of time-dependent EDL rearrangements occurring upon the application of a voltage. The apparatus provides insight, via an audible signal perceptible to the human ear, into the fundamental electrochemical principles governing chemical transformations.

  • Publication number: 20230323544
Abstract: A method of making alkenes and/or epoxides from alkanes and hydroxy-alkanes, respectively. In a reactor having an anode and a cathode separated by an ion exchange membrane, and containing a solution comprising water, halogen ions, and an alkane and/or a hydroxy-alkane, apply a potential across the anode and the cathode such that a halogenated intermediate is produced at the anode as an anolyte and hydroxyl ions are produced at the cathode as a catholyte; and combining the anolyte and the catholyte to yield an alkene and/or an epoxide.

  • Publication number: 20230106006
Abstract: Electrochemical systems and methods for cleaving C—C bonds are disclosed. In performing the method, a reactant adsorption electrical potential, a C—C bond breaking electrical potential, and a desorption electrical potential are sequentially applied to an electrode pair contacting a composition initially containing a target chemical reactant, such as a polymer or alkane. As a result of performing the method, one or more desired chemical products, such as smaller alkane-containing molecules, are released from the electrode into the region between the electrode pairs. The method may be performed at ambient temperatures using renewable electricity.

  • Publication number: 20180023198
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to electrochemical utilization of carbon dioxide. The teachings may be embodied in methods and electrolysis systems in which carbon dioxide is introduced into an electrolysis cell and reduced at a cathode. For example, a reduction method for carbon dioxide utilization by means of an electrolysis system may include: delivering carbon dioxide into a chamber containing a cathode; introducing a first material in the cathode chamber, enabling catalysis of a reduction reaction of carbon dioxide to a hydrocarbon compound or to carbon monoxide; and introducing a second material together with the electrolyte or a reactant/electrolyte mixture into the cathode chamber or metered separately into the cathode chamber. The second material enables cocatalysis of the reduction reaction by promoting charge transfer from the cathode to the first material.
