  • Patent number: 11105254
Abstract: A cooling system of an internal combustion engine includes a plurality of components in the form of heat sources, coolant pumps, actuator devices, and temperature sensors that are fluidically connected to one another via coolant lines, wherein a plurality of cooling circuits, each including at least one of the various components, is formed. In addition, a control device is provided that is in signal-conducting connection with at least one of the temperature sensors, with at least one of the coolant pumps, and with at least one of the actuator devices.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 27, 2019
Date of Patent: August 31, 2021
    Assignee: VOLKSWAGEN AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT
Inventors: Holger Loof, Jana Hartmann, Bodo Hoffmann, Marco Kiel
  • Patent number: 10871100
Abstract: A thermal overload of an internal combustion engine and of cooling system of a combustion machine due to a raising of the temperature of the exhaust gas flowing through an exhaust gas line of the combustion machine, which is provided as a measure to desulfurize a NOx storage catalytic converter and/or to regenerate a particulate filter, is prevented in that before and/or during this measure, the cooling output for the coolant flowing through the cooling system is systematically increased in order to achieve a lowering of the coolant temperature to a value range that lies below what would normally—that is to say, without the simultaneous desulfurization of the NOx storage catalytic converter and/or without the regeneration of the particulate filter—have been provided for the operation of the combustion machine in a corresponding operating state of the internal combustion engine.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: December 22, 2020

  • Patent number: 10612451
Abstract: A method to operate a combustion machine having at least an internal combustion engine, a fresh gas line and a cooling system comprising an ambient heat exchanger. A compressor, which can especially be part of an exhaust gas turbocharger, is integrated into the fresh gas line, and an intercooler is integrated between the compressor and the internal combustion engine and also into the cooling system. In case of an increase in the load demand that is made of the operation of the internal combustion engine, the temperature of the coolant flowing in the cooling system and entering the intercooler is lowered. As a result, the cooling output of the intercooler is increased and consequently, the temperature of the fresh gas (charge air) entering the internal combustion engine is also lowered.
