Abstract: Compounds of formula (I) wherein Me is Pd(II) or Pt(II); R is H or C1-C18 alkyl, or is C3-C8 cycloalkyl, phenyl, pyridyl or phenyl-C1-C4 alkylene, each of which is unsubstituted or substituted by C1-C18 alkyl, C1-C18 alkoxy, R3—O—C(O)—, halogen, —CN or by —NO2; R1 and R2 are each independently of the other H, C1-C12 alkyl or C1-C12 alkoxy or R1 and R2 together are —OCH2O—, —OCH2CH2O—, or —CH═CH—CH═CH—, and R3 is C1-C18 alkyl, C3-C18 cycloalkyl, phenyl, benzyl, C1-C12 alkylphenyl or C1-C12 alkylbenzyl. Compounds of formula (I) are valuable luminophores and/or intermediates for the preparation of palladium (II) or platinum (II) benzoporphyrins, which are likewise luminophores.

Abstract: A new class of chemiluminescent acridinium or benzacridinium compounds is disclosed by virtue of forming an intramolecular energy transfer conjugate (ETC) between the acridinium or benzacridinium compound and a luminophore. A method of extending the emission wavelengths of acridinium or benzacridinium esters in order to further reduce or eliminate the emission spectral overlap between the parent polysubstituted aryl Acridinium Esters (DMAE) and Benzacridinium Esters (LEAE) is disclosed. The ETC's retain the unique desired properties of acridinium or benzacridinium compounds including complete light emission in very short period of time, monophasic emission spectrum, simplicity of triggering mechanism, ability of labeling the biological molecules of interest to form a tracer, and good stability. Additionally, the range of the emission spectrum of an acridinium or benzacridinium compound can now be shifted at will and at longer leap through the choice of a luminophore as the integral part of an ETC molecule.

Abstract: Naphthacene-5,12-diones which are substituted by at least one organic thio radical are not only photoinitiators for the photopolymerization but also sensitizers for the photodimerization of ethylenically unsaturated compounds. Compositions made of these naphthacene-5,12-diones and ethylenically unsaturated compounds are suitable for the preparation of printing inks, paints, printing plates, resist materials or as image recording material.

Abstract: The reaction of maleic acid, fumaric acid and/or maleic anhydride in the presence of N-acylated heterocyclic amidines and at elevated temperature affords dimethylmaleic anhydride in good yield. Catalytic amounts of the amidine employed are sufficient for said reaction.

Abstract: The reaction of maleic acid, fumaric acid and/or maleic anhydride at elevated temperature and in the presence of catalytic amounts of a heterocyclic amidine or a salt thereof with protonic acids affords dimethylmaleic anhydride in good yield.
