Patent number: 10627404Abstract: In one aspect, methods of sensing are described herein. In some embodiments, such a method comprises disposing a population of luminescent species in a test sample, exposing the test sample to electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength corresponding to an excitation wavelength of the luminescent species, detecting light emitted by the luminescent species within a detection region of the test sample, and correlating the light emitted by the luminescent species within the detection region to a presence or absence of an analyte within the test sample. The luminescent species, in a non-aggregated state, exhibits luminescence blinking and, in an aggregated state, does not exhibit luminescence blinking. Additionally, correlating the light emitted by the luminescent species to the presence or absence of the analyte comprises determining whether the light emitted by the luminescent species within the detection region is blinking luminescence or non-blinking luminescence.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2017Date of Patent: April 21, 2020Inventors: Marcus Jones, Kirill Afonin

Publication number: 20200037610Abstract: Methods of improving plant growth involve applying a first growth composition to a plant or part thereof during a first growth stage. The first growth composition includes a first active component combination comprised of auxin, gibberellin and cytokinin. The amount of cytokinin is less than the amount of auxin and gibberellin. The method also involves adjusting the amount of auxin, the amount of gibberellin, and/or the amount of cytokinin after the first growth stage, and applying a second growth composition to the plant or part thereof during a second growth stage. The second growth composition can include a second active component combination, different than the first, that includes a second amount of auxin, a second amount of gibberellin, and a second amount of cytokinin. In some examples, the method can also involve growing the plant to maturity, thereby improving growth of the plant.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2019Publication date: February 6, 2020Inventor: Marcus Jones

Publication number: 20050042634Abstract: The present invention pertains to the discovery that B. anthracis possesses a luxS gene that encodes a functional LuxS polypeptide, and that B. anthracis synthesizes a functional AI-2 quorum-sensing molecule. The invention provides mutant B. anthracis bacteria lacking the function of the luxS gene, which do not produce a functional AI-2 molecule and have growth defects compared to wild-type B. anthracis. The invention also concerns methods for inhibiting the growth of B. anthracis, or for preventing or treating B. anthracis infection, by inhibiting the activity of the B. anthracis LuxS polypeptide, or by exposure of the B. anthracis to furanone. In particular, the invention concerns the use of furanone, a compound that inhibits AI-2-mediated quorum-sensing, to inhibit the growth of B. anthracis, to inhibit B. anthracis toxin production, particularly that of protective antigen, and to prevent or treat B. anthracis infection. The invention also provides methods to prevent B.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 12, 2004Publication date: February 24, 2005Inventors: Marcus Jones, Martin Blaser, Thomas Wood, Dacheng Ren

Publication number: 20040170399Abstract: A device for storing and accessing digital video data comprises first processing means 1 for implementing an operating system and a video system. A hard disk drive 7 is partitioned to provide a video file system storage area and an operating system file system storage area. A Hard Disk Drive Controller 8 controls access to the hard disk drive 7, the Hard Disk Drive Controller 8 comprising at least one register 14 for storing parameters defining a hard disk drive access operation and indicating the status of that operation. Two further registers 12,13 are associated with the video system and the operating system respectively, each further register being arranged to store parameters defining a hard disk drive access operation received from the associated system, and parameters indicating the status of that operation. Second processing means exchanges parameters between the register 14 of the Hard Disk Drive Controller 8 and those of said two further registers 12,13.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 12, 2004Publication date: September 2, 2004Applicant: Zarlink Semiconductor LimitedInventors: Alvar Bray, Marcus Jones

Publication number: 20020156764Abstract: A method of managing data stored in a queue in memory comprises reading data from a head of the queue, and updating the location of a ‘latest read’ pointer, separate from the memory blocks in which the data is stored, to a location corresponding to the end of the data. After transferring the data to a destination and upon receiving confirmation that the data transfer was successful, the location of a ‘committed read’ pointer is updated to point to a location corresponding to the end of the data. This allows uncommitted data to be stored without requiring a separate area of memory.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 28, 2001Publication date: October 24, 2002Applicant: Zarlink Semiconductor LimitedInventors: Alistair Goudie, Colin Helliwell, Marcus Jones

Patent number: 6203026Abstract: An override system for use in combination with an automatic air suspension leveling system for a vehicle is provided The override system includes a cylinder having a piston and a piston rod associated therewith. The cylinder is mounted to the chassis so that the piston rod extends from the cylinder so as to be engageable with a control arm of the air suspension leveling system to move the control arm to an up position upon moving the piston rod from a retracted position to an extended position. The piston and the piston rod are actuated by a pressurized fluid source from the retracted position wherein the control arm is maintained in the neutral position to the extended position wherein the piston rod engages the control arm and causes the control arm to be pivoted to the up position so as to open the regulating valve to cause additional air to be introduced into the air spring thus resulting in the chassis being raised relative to the axle.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1999Date of Patent: March 20, 2001Inventor: Marcus Jones
