A client device such as a set-top box may receive information associated with a notification, wherein the notification comprises a reminder or action that is to be completed. The client device may output information associated with the notification to a display that is being used to present content to a viewer, wherein the output of information includes an identification of the reminder or requested action. The reminder or action may be associated with a predetermined duration of time within which the action is to be completed. If the action is not completed within the predetermined duration of time, the client device may manipulate playback and output of the content to the display until a confirmation of the action being completed is received by the client device.

A controller collects information about a plurality of playback devices wherein the playback devices share a network resource. The controller also collects information regarding the network resource. The controller allocates the network resource to deliver one or more requested video segments to one or more playback devices based on the information collected from the plurality of playback devices and the information collected regarding the network resource. By providing a controller that is aware of the available network resources and the specifications of the playback devices, the network resource can be managed in a way that improves the quality of experience for end users across all the playback devices while maximizing the efficiency of the network resources.

Abstract: A method for interfacing a gateway with a plurality of electronic devices provided in a home networking environment includes establishing a communications link between the gateway and an intermediate device as well as providing input and output features at the intermediate device. A gateway in accordance with the disclosed technology may, for example, correspond to a cable modem, DSL interface, or other wireless home gateway that interfaces multiple data lines in a home networking environment. The remote intermediate device is outfitted with at least one wireless transmitter/receiver for communicating with a gateway and optionally with the networked electronic devices or appliances. Input features include a keypad with multiple user input buttons which may be actuated by a user's single hand when the remote device is held in the same single hand. Output features include a visual display such as an LCD matrix display.
