A preferred dye intermediate in the composition is 1-(4-aminophenyl)-2-pyrrolidinemethanol or cosmetically acceptable salts thereof, which produce intense black colors when used in admixture with a suitable coupling agents, such as 3-aminophenol, in conventional hair dye base formulations.
