  • Patent number: 8295815
Abstract: The present invention provides a technique to reduce the quantity of paging attempts to mobile terminals. The technique involves periodically rejecting mobile terminating SMS (MT-SMS) messages destined to a mobile subscriber who has already had no paging response success for a previous MT-SMS message until the mobile terminal is reachable or upon the timeout of a Mobile Not Reachable Flag (MNRF) rejection period. The present invention targets mobile subscribers who were out of radio coverage and allows the mobile subscriber to terminate voice calls. Mobile terminal originated activity is not affected. The present invention may co-exist with the existing SMS Center mobile terminating SMS polling mechanism in the market today.

  • Patent number: 7630488
Abstract: A system and method for generating Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) tones in the media gateway of a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) network. The method includes receiving a DTMF signal in a media gateway controller, where the DTMF signal can be a stop tone request, or a start tone request, sending the DTMF signal from the media gateway controller to the media gateway, monitoring the status of a set of timers, where the set of timers includes a minimum tone duration timer, an inter tone timer, and a maximum tone duration timer, and responding to the received DTMF signal, said status of said timers, or a queued request. The system includes a media gateway, a plurality of timers within the media gateway, a media gateway controller, a finite state machine within the media gateway, where the finite state machine includes the following states: No Tone, Play Tone, Queue Stop Request, Inter Tone Timing, Queue Start Request, and Ready to Stop Tone.

  • Patent number: 7486621
Abstract: A method and apparatus for load balancing and overload control of packet media gateways under control of a single media gateway controller is provided. More particularly, the invention is directed to a technique for load balancing and overload control by defining an interface between the media gateway (MG) and the media gateway controller (MGC) to handle both load balancing as well as general congestion and resource congestion. In addition, a new event strategy is defined that reports resource utilization so that the media gateway controller (MGC) can take appropriate action to maximize call completion. Such action may include evenly distributing traffic among available media gateways, smart routing around a congested media gateway or intelligent throttling of traffic based on knowledge of specific resources that are congested.

  • Patent number: 7283545
Abstract: A method for identifying ephemeral terminations in a packet-based network includes identifying the Radio Network Controller with an RNC indicator in a first level, identifying the one or more ICCs with an ICC indicator in a second level, identifying the one or more PMCs with a PMC indicator in a third level, and identifying the one or more local components with a local component indicator in a fourth level. The first level, second level, third level and fourth level form different portions of the termination identifier. The termination identifier is structured so that the one or more local components identified in the fourth level are associated with the one or more PMCs identified in the third level, and the one or more PMCs identified in the third level are associated with the one or more ICCs identified in the second level and the one or more ICCs identified in the second level are associated with the one or more RNCs identified in the first level.

  • Patent number: 7181219
Abstract: A method and system for implementing hard handover in wireless telecommunications network. The method includes connecting a call from user equipment in a first radio coverage area to a first media gateway in a mobile switching center via a first connection point in said first media gateway and further connecting the call from the first media gateway to another party via a second connection point in the first media gateway. Then, in response to the user equipment moving from the first radio coverage area to a second radio coverage area, connecting the call from the user equipment in the second radio coverage area to a second media gateway in the mobile switching center, linking the call from the second media gateway to the first media gateway via a third connection point in the first media gateway, and removing the first termination in said first media gateway.
