  • Publication number: 20170017034
Abstract: A spot-size converter for coupling light between a first waveguide and a second waveguide extends along a longitudinal waveguiding axis and includes a transition region. The transition region includes a first part of waveguiding structure, which is coupled to the first waveguide, and a second part of waveguiding structure, which is coupled to the second waveguide. The second part of waveguiding structure includes high-index elements arranged in multiple vertically spaced rows and horizontally spaced columns, and extends along the longitudinal waveguiding axis at least partially over the first part of waveguiding structure so as to define a low-index region where the mode of the first waveguide progressively transforms into the mode of the second waveguide, thereby enabling light propagation via a mode of the combined system of the first and second parts of waveguiding structures.

  • Publication number: 20160004021
Abstract: A connectorized optical chip assembly connectable to an external optical fiber having a fiber connector is provided. The connectorized optical chip assembly includes a substrate, an optical chip having an on-chip optical waveguide and a connectorized interface. The connectorized interface includes an optical coupling element mounted in optical alignment with the on-chip optical waveguide. The connectorized interface includes a chip connector engaging the optical coupling element and configured for mating with the fiber connector of the external optical fiber, so as to provide an optical coupling of light between the optical coupling element and the external optical fiber. The connectorized optical chip assembly also includes a mechanical support structure supporting the connectorized interface onto the substrate. Preferably, the components of the connectorized optical assembly are made of materials heat resistant to temperatures used to melt solder in surface mount processes.

  • Publication number: 20150247974
Abstract: A spot-size converter for coupling light between first and second waveguides respectively supporting first and second propagation modes having substantially different dimensions is provided. The spot-size converter includes a lower and an upper waveguiding structure each characterized by an effective refractive index. The lower waveguiding structure is coupled to the first waveguide to receive light therefrom or transmit light thereto in the first propagation mode. The upper waveguiding structure is coupled to the second waveguide to transmit light thereto or receive light therefrom in the second propagation mode. The upper waveguiding structure includes a plurality of longitudinally extending high-index elements arranged in multiple vertically spaced rows.

  • Patent number: 8948549
Abstract: A polarization rotator assembly for rotating a polarization mode of an electromagnetic signal is provided. The polarization rotator assembly has a waveguiding structure of co-extensive first and second layers defining, successively, an input portion, a subwavelength composite portion and a polarization rotating portion. The subwavelength composite portion is formed by the first and second layers, where the second layer defines a subwavelength pattern. The polarization rotator portion is geometrically configured to rotate the polarization mode of the electromagnetic signal.

  • Patent number: 6765679
Abstract: Interleavers, based on a Michelson interferometer with a Gires-Tournois (GT) etalon in each arm, are becoming popular in the filtering of light in the fiber optics telecommunications industry. As the channel spacing becomes closer together, e.g. 50 GHz or 25 GHz, dispersion compensation becomes an important factor in the choice and design of a system. The present invention solves the problem of increased chromatic dispersion by utilizing multi-cavity Gires-Tournois (MCGT) etalons, wherein the dispersion from one MCGT is used to compensate or cancel the dispersion from the other MCGT. In an optimum design for a dual cavity GT etalon, the dispersion profile of the first MCGT will have a similar amplitude and frequency as the dispersion profile of the second MCGT, only shifted by half the period so that the positive slopes of one profile are aligned with the negative slopes of the other profile.

  • Patent number: 6683721
Abstract: The present invention relates to an interferometer useful in the interleaving and de-interleaving of optical wavelength channels. Typically the invention comprises a beamsplitter and two resonators, e.g. GT etalons or ring resonators. The beamsplitter splits an input beam of light into a first sub-beam directed to follow a first path and a second sub-beam directed to follow a second path. The first resonator has a first effective cavity length and receives the first sub-beam. The second resonator has a second effective cavity length and receives the second sub-beam. The first path and the second path have an effective optical path difference approximately equal to one-half the first effective cavity length. In one embodiment, the front plates of the GT etalons each have a different reflectivity, and are selected to provide a desired spectral response.
