  • Patent number: 4244795
Abstract: A process and apparatus are provided for electrolytically removing metal ions from a solution thereof with an electrochemical cell having cathode and anode compartments. In accordance with the invention, an aqueous solution is passed upwards through a bed of metallic particles acting as cathodes in the cathode compartment to convert the bed into a fluidized state, i.e., suspend the particles in the solution. A portion of the solution leaving the cathode compartment is recirculated through the bed and the remainder is discharged from the system. The anode compartment is separated from the cathode compartment by a diaphragm. An anode liquid is passed through the anode compartment. The portions of the solution in the cathode compartment and the recirculating solution are protected from contact with air in order to prevent them from absorbing oxygen.
