  • Patent number: 6778310
Abstract: Optical pulses at a given repetition rate (f) are obtained by modulating an optical signal by means of a Mach-Zehnder modulator. The modulator is driven by means of a driving signal including, in addition to a sinusoidal component at a frequency (f/2) half the repetition rate (f) of the pulses, at least one odd harmonic of the sinusoidal component. Very short optical pulses can thus be generated without giving rise to undesired side effects such as ringing in pulse tails.

Abstract: Optical pulses at a given repetition rate (f) are obtained by modulating an optical signal (2) by means of a Mach-Zehnder modulator. The modulator (3) is driven by means of a driving signal including, in addition to a sinusoidal component at a frequency (f/2) half the repetition rate (f) of the pulses, at least one odd harmonic of the sinusoidal component. Very short optical pulses can thus be generated without giving rise to undesired side effects such as ringing in pulse tails.

  • Patent number: 6384385
Abstract: The component, located inside a corresponding package, is associated with a first heat sensor, located in proximity to the component inside the package, together with a second heat sensor. A thermal conditioning element is controlled in such a way as to keep the temperature of the first sensor at a level identified by a reference signal (rifv). The second sensor is associated with the package in such a way as to generate a second temperature signal indicating the external temperature, and the aforesaid reference signal (rifv;) is modified as a function of the said second temperature signal, providing effective temperature control of the component.

  • Patent number: 5917633
Abstract: The signal to be controlled is sent along an optical fiber by a wavelength tunable laser whose emission wavelength may be varied as a function of a possible phase variation in the received signal with respect to a reference phase. At the receiving end of the fiber a control signal is generated by extracting a fraction of the power associated with the received signal and sending such fraction back towards the transmitting end, and at the transmitting end the phase of the fraction is compared with that of the original signal and the tunable laser is driven in such a way as to transmit a wavelength such that the clock information reaches the receiving end with the reference phase.

  • Patent number: 5416625
Abstract: Optical demultiplexing system, wherein from an optical carrier modulated by a TDM data flow the wanted tributary is extracted as an optical signal. The system makes use of a semiconductor optical amplifier, whose gain is modulated due to saturation effect. The amplifier receives both the modulated optical carrier and one or a plurality of sampling optical carriers, with wavelengths different from that of the modulated carrier. One or a plurality of optical filters supply at the output the tributaries by extracting from the amplifier output the sampling carriers modulated by data signals.
