A freewheel mode is activated to increase the energy efficiency so that the motor vehicle is neither powered nor decelerated by the motor unit, thus allowing the wheels of the motor vehicle to essentially roll freely. In the freewheel mode, the electric machine is operated as a motor which introduces a freewheel mode pull torque to the drive train.
