    Abstract: A method for operating an internal combustion engine, such as a marine diesel engine, that is operative for rotating an output shaft of the engine in a normal operating mode for generating a desired output power based on an operating fuel quantity introduced into the engine. The engine is operated in a calibration mode at a defined rotational speed of the output shaft, and a calibrating fuel quantity introduced into the engine to maintain the defined rotational speed in the calibration mode is determined. In the normal operating mode of the engine, the engine output power is determined based on the operating fuel quantity being introduced into the engine in the normal operating mode and the calibrating fuel quantity determined in the calibration mode.
