  • Patent number: 8254293
Abstract: A network operating center for a network comprising known-location and unknown-location nodes can be configured to receive from each unknown-location node estimates of the distances from that node to each of its neighbor nodes. The network controller can then choose an initial location estimate for each unknown-location node and compute distances from the initial location estimates to the corresponding neighbor nodes. The network operating center can then choose subsequent location estimates of the unknown-location nodes by minimizing an error criterion based on a comparison of the received neighbor node distance estimates with the computed neighbor node distances.

  • Publication number: 20070268898
Abstract: Included are embodiments for advanced routing. At least one embodiment of a method includes receiving a message from a first device at a first backbone controller. The message may be configured to indicate a second device as a desired recipient and sending the message to a network controller. The message includes a request to a second backbone controller for a route to the second device, the second backbone controller related to the second device. Some embodiments include receiving the route from the network controller.

  • Publication number: 20060056423
Abstract: A gateway node that communicates with a plurality of satellite nodes positioned on one or more logical layers is disclosed. Satellite nodes on the first logical layer operate as repeaters for nodes not on the first logical layer. The gateway node and each satellite node communicate outbound messages during a synchronized outbound communication time. Satellite nodes execute a receiving communication time that overlaps with a transmitting communication time for a satellite node on a logical layer that is one layer closer to the gateway node during the outbound communication time. The satellite nodes also communicate messages to the gateway node during a synchronized inbound communication time. Each satellite node executes a transmitting communication time that overlaps with a receiving communication time for a satellite node on a logical layer that is one layer closer to the gateway node during the inbound communication time so that messages are communicated to the gateway node.

  • Publication number: 20060056368
Abstract: One or more electronic signs each coupled to a transceiver or radio node that is communicably coupled to an access node may change its display, as directed by the access node. The access node is configured to receive data related to adjusting information displayed on one or more of the electronic signs. The access node wirelessly transmits an outbound communication to a number of radio nodes logically distributed around the access node. One or more of the radio nodes or may be configured without an electronic sign but instead be configured to repeat the outbound communication. A recipient radio node receives the outbound communication message and executes instructions contained in the outbound communication message so that its electronic sign changes the display of information, such as the price.

  • Publication number: 20060055529
Abstract: Each of a plurality of satellite nodes coupled to a sensing device or an actuator and logically dispersed around an access node are configured to wirelessly communicate alarm conditions. A first satellite node detects and accesses an alarm condition and then prepares an alarm message containing an alarm code corresponding to the alarm condition and an address indication. The first satellite node may thereafter receive alarm messages from other satellite nodes logically further from the access node than the first satellite node. Alarm codes contained in the received alarm messages are filtered and compared to the alarm code of the prepared alarm message. The first satellite node includes a sender address in the prepared alarm message for each received alarm message containing an alarm code that matches the alarm code of the prepared alarm message. The first satellite node transmits the prepared alarm message to the access node.

  • Publication number: 20060056331
Abstract: A method for a gateway node to wirelessly communicate with a plurality of satellite nodes coupled to a sensing device or an actuator on one or more logical layers is disclosed. The gateway node generates a broadcast message for communication to the plurality of satellite nodes that is thereafter transmitted during a gateway node transmit communication time to one or more satellite nodes on a first logical layer of nodes that are within a broadcast range of the gateway node. The satellite nodes on the first logical layer receive the broadcast message, execute instructions contained in the broadcast message, and repeat the broadcast message to one or more additional satellite nodes on a logical layer beyond the broadcast range of the gateway node. An acknowledgement message is communicated back to the gateway node from each satellite node indicating receipt and execution of the broadcast message.

  • Publication number: 20060056363
Abstract: A system for an access node coupled to a computer to wirelessly communicate with a plurality of disparately located radio nodes each coupled to a meter or other sensor is provided. The radio nodes within the communication range of the access node orient onto a first logical layer to directly communicate with the access node. Additional radio nodes beyond the communication range of the access node indirectly communicate with the access node by detecting communications from radio nodes on lower logical layers that are closer to the access node and selecting a radio node of the detected radio nodes to be a repeater node. The selected repeater node has available memory capacity and a suitable power number to qualify as a repeater, which may periodically change. Sensed data is directly or indirectly communicated to the access node for further communication to a backend system computer.

  • Publication number: 20060056456
Abstract: A system and method for consolidating messages in a network comprising an access node coupled to a computer and a plurality of radio nodes coupled to sensing devices, such as a utility meter, is disclosed. Inbound message consolidation includes a radio node receiving two or more inbound messages that are consolidated. The radio node wirelessly transmits the consolidated message to a radio node logically closer to the access node or directly to the access node if the access node is within the transmission range of the radio node. The access node extracts the individual messages from the consolidated message upon receipt. For outbound messages, the access node consolidates original messages having common routes and transmits the consolidated message to a last node in the common route. The last node in the common route splits the consolidated message into the original messages and transmits each one to a destination radio node.
