Patent number: 6441096Abstract: A multimodal polymer composition for pipes is disclosed as well as a pipes made thereof. The polymer is a multimodal polyethylene with a density of 0.930-0.965 g/cm3, and a viscosity at a shear stress of 747 Pa (&eegr;747 Pa) of at least 650 Pa.s, said multimodal polyethylene comprising a low molecular weight (LMW) ethylene homopolymer fraction and a high molecular weight (HMW) ethylene copolymer fraction, said HMW fraction having a weight ratio of the LMW fraction to the HMW fraction of (35-55):(65-45). Preferably, the multimodal polyethylene has a viscosity at a shear stress of 2.7 kPa (&eegr;2.7 kPa) of 260-450 kPa.s; and a shear thinning index (SHI) defined as the ratio of the viscosities at shear stresses of 2.7 and 210 kPa, respectively, of SHI27/210=50-150, and a storage modulus (G′) at a loss modulus (G″) of 5 kPa, of G′5 kPa≧3000 Pa. The pipe is made of the multimodal polymer composition and withstands a stress of 8.0 MPa gauge during 50 years at 20° C. (MRS8.0).Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 2001Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Borealis Technology OyInventors: Mats Bäckman, Eeva-Leena Heino, Solveig Johansson, Jussi Laurell, Arja Lehtinen, Jarmo Lindroos, Marja Ora, Elisabeth Ribarits, Teija Sihvonen, Jari {umlaut over (Aa)}rilä

Patent number: 6333086Abstract: The present invention concerns a multilayered polymer film structure, which comprises at least one first layer (1) containing a thermoplastic polymer and at least one second layer (2), arranged adjacent to said first layer, containing a liquid crystalline polymer. According to the invention, the second layer (2) consists essentially of a compounded polymer blend formed by the liquid crystalline polymer and a thermoplastic polymer, the liquid crystalline polymer of the second layer forms a continuous phase, and the first and the second layers (1, 2) contain the same thermoplastic polymer. The oxygen transmission rate of the second layer is less than about 150 cm3/(m2·d·bar), determined according to the standard ASTM D 3985-81, and the water vapour transmission rate of the integral film structure is less than 10 g/(m2·24·h) at RH 80% 23° C., determined according to ASTM F 1249-90. The present structure can be used as a barrier layer in packages.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1996Date of Patent: December 25, 2001Assignee: Optatech CorporationInventors: Marja Ora, Esa Suokas, Mika Härkönen, Seppo Kuusela, Erkki Laiho
