Patent number: 11322267Abstract: A generator is installed on and provides electrical power from a turbine by converting the turbine's mechanical energy to electricity. The generated electrical power is used to power controls of the turbine so that the turbine can remain in use through its own energy. The turbine can be a safety-related turbine in a nuclear power plant, such that, through the generator, loss of plant power will not result in loss of use of the turbine and safety-related functions powered by the same. Appropriate circuitry and electrical connections condition the generator to work in tandem with any other power sources present, while providing electrical power with properties required to safely power the controls.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 2019Date of Patent: May 3, 2022Assignee: GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy Americas LLCInventors: Arthur M Thinguldstad, Mark A. Bergman

Patent number: 9460818Abstract: A supplementary injection device is installed in a nuclear power plant to draw coolant and inject coolant using an entraining fluid. The injection device can be a venturi or other passive device operable at relatively low fluid pressure that draws coolant through suction at the venturi narrowing point and mixes the coolant with the fluid for injection. The injection device is operable with a known BWR design, where the device is attached to a steam connection to the main steam line of the reactor, a coolant connection drawing from suction lines to a suppression cool or condensate tank, and an outlet connection injecting into the main feedwater lines. In a BWR, the injection device is operable without electricity and at a wide range of pressures, even less than 50 pounds per square inch, to maintain coolant levels in the reactor.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2012Date of Patent: October 4, 2016Assignee: GE-HITACHI NUCLEAR ENERGY AMERICAS LLCInventor: Mark A. Patent number: 9182290Abstract: A temperature sensor array includes several temperature sensors at different positions for installation within an instrumentation tube of a nuclear reactor. The temperature sensors measure temperature at multiple axial positions of the nuclear reactor, and plant operators are able to access and interpret this measurement data. Temperatures associated with vessel coolant boiling or loss and/or fuel damage can be detected by the temperature sensors to permit more direct determinations of core fluid levels. Multiple temperature sensor arrays permit vessel fluid levels and conditions to be measured at multiple core locations.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2011Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignee: GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy Americas LLCInventors: Robert J. Ginsberg, John R. Bass, Mark A. Bergman
