  • Publication number: 20030111456
Abstract: A cooking appliance includes a grilling grate supported directly above at least one heating element and situated adjacent to a downdraft grill. The grilling grate includes structure to effectively shield the heating element(s) from an air flow generated during operation of the downdraft system. More specifically, the grilling grate includes a grilling surface on an upper side, and a plurality of conductive heat members on a lower side. The conductive heat members have side portions which extend about the heating element in order to cloak the heating element from the effects of the airflow produced by the downdraft system thereby providing a more efficient means of energy transfer to the grilling surface.

  • Patent number: 6455818
Abstract: A filtering system for a downdraft cooking appliance includes a filter assembly arranged directly below an air grill leading to a venting plenum. The filter assembly includes a liner which supports a filter element and is removably positioned inside the plenum. The filter element can be arranged inside the liner, attached thereto or insert molded into the liner material. The liner is preferably suspended from the air grill so as to be readily removable in unison with the grill for inspection, cleaning or replacement. In a preferred embodiment, the liner is formed with opposing, outwardly projecting flanges which slide into mating channels formed into the underside of the grill. With this arrangement, exposure of the wall surfaces of the plenum to the cooking byproducts is minimized, thereby greatly reducing any necessary cleaning of these surfaces.

  • Patent number: 6399925
Abstract: A versatile surface cooking cartridge for use in an appliance includes a lower container portion to which is attached a lid member. A first heating element is arranged in the lower container portion and a second heating element is carried by and extends along a lower surface of the lid member. One of a replaceable rack or cooking plate can be positioned in the lower container portion, above the first heating element, to enable food items to be cooked by heat generated by either or both of the first and second heating elements. The cooking plate preferably has a sloped surface leading to a recess trap for collecting byproducts generated during cooking upon the plate. The cooking plate can define a grilling plate, a griddle plate, or a reversible, combination grilling/griddle plate.

  • Patent number: 6173708
Abstract: A gas burner mounting assembly includes a gas injector having a main body portion positioned between a chassis member of a gas cooking appliance and a ceramic based cooktop of the appliance. The gas injector also includes an upper body portion which extends through an aperture formed in the cooktop. A burner retention bracket is interposed between the main body portion of the gas injector and an underside of the cooktop. A resilient support preferably acts between the gas injector and the cooktop, although no rigid attachment is made between these elements. The gas injector is mechanically, fixedly secured to the cooktop in order to allow the gas injector to flex with the cooktop.

  • Patent number: 5660452
Abstract: An indicator for an appliance includes a light bar formed of molded plastic material. The bar is interconnected to the control elements of the appliance so the periphery of the bar lights whenever any element of the appliance is active. The bar is designed so the periphery of the light bar is exposed along the exterior edge of the appliance.

  • Patent number: 5287799
Abstract: A countertop cooking unit provides an upper surface that is level with the countertop and has removable interior parts that are exposed to the residues of cooking operations. A cooktop housing is supported by the countertop and forms a burner box having an open top level with the countertop. A removable drip pan is recessed below the open top of the housing within the burner box and is removably carried by the housing at its peripheral edges. A downdraft ventilation plenum is recessed below, and includes an air flow opening below, the open top of the housing and is carried, at least in part, by the burner box, and at least one heating unit is recessed and removably carried within the removable drip pan. In grilling units, a removable grill pan liner is recessed within, and removably carried by, the drip pan at its peripheral edge and removably carries a grill heater recessed within its periphery.

  • Patent number: 5158068
Abstract: A cooktop cover system and apparatus having at least one cooktop cover recessed within a surrounding framework to provide a flat surface when a cooking surface positioned under the cover is not in use. The cover comprises a generally flat plate-like member with a plurality of support legs attached to the plate-like member and extending downwardly therefrom to detachably engage a rigid planar member positioned under the plate-like member. At least one of the support legs is disposed inwardly from an adjacent outer edge of the plate-like member to provide a lever arm so that downward force applied between the inwardly disposed support leg and the adjacent outer edge of the plate-like member pivots the cooktop cover and raises the opposite edge to allow removal of the cover.

  • Patent number: 4619604
Abstract: A flame radiator structure is disclosed for inhibiting formation of oxides of nitrogen (NO.sub.x) by a combustion system of the type having at least one monoport inshot burner which burns fuel to produce a combustion flame which is projected through an inlet opening into a heat exchanger for the combustion system. The flame radiator structure comprises a perforated, tubular, main body section having open ends and means for attaching this perforated tubular main body section at the inlet to the heat exchanger. Alternating ribs and oblong openings are spaced along side walls of the perforated main body section to stiffen the structure and to allow the structure to safely expand and contract in response to thermal cycling.

  • Patent number: 4476850
Abstract: A noise reducing heat exchanger assembly for a combustion system is disclosed. The heat exchanger assembly includes a plurality of side by side heat exchangers each having a single inlet for an inshot burner. An auxiliary port is located just above each burner inlet. A coupling chamber may be used to interconnect the auxiliary ports to allow acoustical coupling between the heat exchangers and to substantially prevent potential fluid flow between the heat exchangers and the surroundings of the combustion system. This heat exchanger assembly is particularly suitable for use as part of an induced draft combustion furnace.

  • Patent number: 4205653
Abstract: A downflow furnace assembly having a combustible floor base including a pair of parallel side rails, a pair of parallel, variable length cross rails, and integral spacing flanges, and a method of constructing the combustible floor base. The integral spacing flanges are for maintaining the lower plenum of the downflow furnace assembly at a preset distance from the edge of a combustible floor and are formed by die pressing the same metal sheets that are pressed to form the rails of the floor base. The variable length cross rails are each comprised of a pair of interfitted channel members that are in slidable communication with each other. By sliding the channel members with respect to each other, the lengths of the cross rails and the width of the base can be adjusted. The surface of each channel member defines a plurality of holes, and each cross rail can be adjusted to various preset lengths by aligning different holes.
