    Abstract: A steerable catheter guide comprised of an outer tube and an inner member surrounded by and rotatable with respect to said outer tube is disclosed. The steerable catheter guide also includes a formable member bonded to said inner member and said outer tube in the area of their respective distal ends. This design causes any rotation of the inner member with respect to the outer member to impart a torque directly to the distal end of the guide making steering much easier and less erratic.

    Abstract: A tubular catheter having an inflatable expander member mounted thereon at the distal end thereof is provided with an extremely fine slit passing through the wall of the tubular catheter such that when a liquid is introduced under pressure into the proximal end thereof for inflating the balloon, any air present in the lumen of the catheter and in the yet unexpanded balloon is forced out through the slit. The slit or vent opening through the tube wall is so small that when the catheter is again aspirated to remove the purging fluid, air does not re-enter the expander through the vent opening.

    Abstract: A method of attaching a plastic hub member to the proximal end of a Teflon-lined thermoplastic tubular catheter so as to prevent delamination of the Teflon lining at the site of the attachment. The thermoplastic outer layer of the tubular catheter is removed in a grinding operation for a predetermined distance from the proximal end of the tube to expose a short length of the Teflon lining. Next, a spinning forming tool is forced against the proximal end of the tubular catheter causing the exposed Teflon lining to be rolled back over the outer surface of the thermoplastic tube. Next, the proximal end of the catheter is inserted into the bore of the hub and because the Teflon layer has been rolled over the end portion of the tubular catheter, it is trapped against an internal flange formed in the catheter hub when the hub is adhesively bonded to the exterior of the thermoplastic layer and prevented from delaminating and possibly occluding the lumen of the catheter.

    Abstract: A catheter assembly especially designed for the performance of atherectomy procedures which includes a guide catheter having an inflatable balloon disposed on the distal end portion thereof, the guide catheter being dimensioned to receive in its lumen an elongated drive tube having an annular cutting tip affixed to the distal end thereof. A rotational drive mechanism is coupled to the drive tube at its proximal end for rotating same. Provision is also made in the drive mechanism for introducing fluid through the lumen of the guide catheter for inflating its balloon and for drawing a vacuum on the lumen of the drive tube for aspirating the treatment site. In use, the guide catheter with the drive tube and cutter head retracted is advanced up to the occlusion and then, the balloon is inflated to lock the distal end in place. Next, the cutter is rotated at high speed and advanced into the occlusion, while blood and any loose particulate matter is aspirated.

    Abstract: A catheter for maintaining the patency of a blood vessel damaged during the course of angiography or angioplasty procedures comprising a toroidal coil whose adjacent turns are tightly wound and in contact with one another over a majority of the length thereof but which are separated from one another over a predetermined longitudinal dimension near the distal end thereof. The tightly wound touching coils may be covered with a Teflon coating and when the catheter must be used to maintain patency in a coronary artery, it is advanced along the guide wire of an angiography or angioplasty catheter until the open turn portion of the bail-out catheter bridges the site of the damaged vessel. After the angiographic or angioplasty catheter and its guide wire are removed, the bail-out catheter remains in position so that blood can flow through the open turns of that catheter and beyond until such time as surgical repair can be made.

    Abstract: A hand-operated device for inflating the expander on a balloon-type catheter and for perfusing fluids through the catheter and out its distal end. The inflator device comprises a housing containing a relatively large diameter and volume syringe and a relatively small diameter and volume syringe and a three-way valve for selectively controlling the fluid flow from the large syringe into the small syringe, from the large syringe into the lumen of the catheter or from the small syringe into the lumen of the catheter. By incorporating the two syringes in the same housing, a large volume of fluid, such as a radiopaque contrast medium, can be injected through the catheter and out its distal end while the small diameter and volume syringe can be used to pressurize the expander with considerably less effort than if the large diameter syringe had been used.

    Abstract: An inflation/deflation device for an angioplasty balloon catheter which permits quick inflation to an approximate working pressure followed by a fine but slower adjustment to a final desired pressure. The device includes a housing containing a syringe of the type having a cylindrical chamber containing a piston. A specially designed plunger extends from the proximal end of the housing whereby the initial approxiate pressure can be achieved by the hand-squeezing of the plunger and a slight rotation of that plunger is used to maintain the plunger in a locked disposition. An internal shaft is disposed within the tubular plunger and its distal end is secured to the syringe's piston. The internal shaft includes a threaded segment on its exterior surface engaging a correspondingly threaded surface on the interior of the plunger such that rotation of the shaft relative to the plunger causes axial movement of the piston within the syringe.

    Abstract: An angioplasty catheter having an outer tubular member and a coaxially aligned inner tubular member. The outer tube is of a first predetermined diameter over a majority of its length, but then tapers down, in a transition zone, to a second predetermined diameter less than the first and which extends to the catheter's distal tip. The inner tube has a distal end shaped to mate with the inside surface of the outer tube in the transition zone to form a seal when the inner tube is advanced in the distal direction. An expander is secured to the outer tube and inflatable by perfusing a fluid in the zone between the outer and inner tubes and through ports formed through the wall of the outer tube in the transition zone. By manipulating the proximal end of the inner tube, blood or other fluids may be perfused or exasperated and made to inflate or deflate the expander, the distal end of the inner tube acting as a valve, seating with the inner surface of the outer tube in the transition zone.

    Abstract: A method of forming a soft, deformable tip at the distal end of an elongated, flexible catheter made from a thermoplastic or elastomeric material in which the tip portion is first heated to soften the plastic and, subsequently, a specially prepared forming tool is inserted into the lumen of the catheter at the distal end and advanced to the point where an annular protuberance of a predetermined outside diameter is forced into the lumen so as to stretch and shape the plastic to conform to the forming tool. The distal end is then cooled and the forming tool removed, leaving a soft, collapsible segment integrally formed at the distal end of the catheter.

    Abstract: A catheter for insertion in a body orifice or blood vessel comprising an elongated tubular body with a soft, symmetrically deformable member on the distal end thereof for decreasing the likelihood of injury to body tissue upon the insertion and removal thereof. In one embodiment, the tip member comprises a toroidally shaped inflatable and non-distensible expandable "balloon" mounted on the end of the otherwise relatively rigid tip of the catheter. The catheter has a lumen extending the length thereof and communicating with the tip member whereby a fluid may be introduced to control the size, shape and firmness of the tip member. In a second embodiment, the soft deformable tip member comprises an annular plastic or rubber sleeve surrounding the otherwise rigid tip of the catheter and normally extending there beyond by a predetermined distance. The thickness or composition of the sleeve is varied about a circumferential ring so as to provide a preferred location for the collapse of the sleeve.
