  • Patent number: 11035282
Abstract: An exhaust purification system for the reduction of emissions from an exhaust stream, including an oxygen detection system; a catalyst; and an air injection system positioned between the oxygen detection system and the catalyst to inject air into the exhaust stream at designated exhaust conditions, to protect the catalyst from oxygen-deprived conditions.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 29, 2018
Date of Patent: June 15, 2021
Assignee: Johnson Matthey Public Limited Company
    Inventor: Mark Schmale

  • Patent number: 8122710
Abstract: Dosing components (22, 24, 32) in an engine exhaust after-treatment system (18) that includes an SCR catalyst (20) are thermally managed by flowing engine coolant through a coolant passage in a urea injector (22) that injects aqueous urea into the after-treatment system, controlling a three-way valve (60) to selectively direct coolant flow leaving the urea injector to a first branch that is in heat exchange relationship with a tank (24) that holds a supply of aqueous urea and a supply pump module (32) that pumps aqueous urea from the tank to the urea injector, and a second branch that is not in heat exchange relationship with either the tank or the supply pump, and returning coolant from the branches to the engine cooling system.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 1, 2008
Date of Patent: February 28, 2012
Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLC
Inventors: Mark Schmale, Gregory A. Griffin
  • Patent number: 8056327
Abstract: An exhaust gas-cooling device for use on an exhaust gas conveyance system of a vehicle having an exhaust gas passageway to emit exhaust gases from an engine to an outlet includes an exhaust passageway pipe in fluid communication with the engine, and a micro-venturi mixing chamber pipe in fluid communication with and located downstream of the exhaust passageway pipe. The micro-venturi mixing chamber pipe defines the outlet of the exhaust gas-cooling device and has at least one aperture disposed on a pipe body of the micro-venturi mixing chamber for introducing ambient air into the micro-venturi mixing chamber pipe.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 21, 2006
Date of Patent: November 15, 2011
Assignee: International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLC
Inventors: Andrea C. Brown, Jeffrey R. Kelso, Michael J. Eifert, Timothy Juan, Mark A. Schmale, Daniel C. Dew, Roger W. Byers, Ronald E. Schoon, Brent Koontz

  • Patent number: 7628012
Abstract: An Exhaust Temperature Reduction Device for Aftertreatment Device is provided useful for lowering the temperature of exhaust gasses exiting the tailpipe of a vehicle having an aftertreatment device. The Exhaust Temperature Reduction Device for Aftertreatment Device may be manufactured from a single piece of formed sheet metal, two pieces of formed sheet metal that have been joined, or a net formed process such as investment cast stainless steel.

  • Publication number: 20080282689
Abstract: An exhaust gas-cooling device for use on an exhaust gas conveyance system of a vehicle to emit exhaust gases from an engine to an outlet includes a pipe defining an exhaust gas passageway that is in fluid communication with the engine, and a diffuser in fluid communication with the exhaust gas passageway. The diffuser is configured for receiving the pipe, and has a body defining an outlet of the exhaust gas passageway to the ambient, and a diffusing structure disposed on the body generally opposite the outlet. The diffusing structure has a separating structure configured for receiving and diverting the flow of exhaust gas emitted from the pipe, and a guiding structure configured for guiding the diverted flow of exhaust gas along the body to the outlet.
