    Abstract: Embodiments herein relate to systems and methods for secure messaging interoperability between email gateways with different capabilities. A capability indicator within the recipient's public certificate addresses potential incompatibility between email gateways. A sending gateway obtains the recipient's certificate and checks the certificate for the indicator. Based on the check, the sender adaptively selects either an enhanced or a legacy encryption scheme. The message is then encrypted using the selected scheme and transmitted.
