  • Patent number: 7609707
Abstract: Communication traffic management systems and methods are disclosed. One or more traffic managers may be provided for managing communication traffic to be sent toward respective groups of one or more destinations. A determination is made as to whether one traffic manager or more than one traffic manager is provided. If one traffic manager is provided, then communication traffic is transferred to the traffic manager. In the case where more than one traffic manager is provided, received communication traffic is transferred to a traffic manager for a destination toward which the communication traffic is to be sent. Traffic managers may be added to or removed from communication equipment to provide varying levels of traffic management.

  • Patent number: 7414973
Abstract: Communication traffic management systems and methods are disclosed. A threshold status of a communication traffic queue of a second communication traffic management device which is capable of receiving communication traffic from a first communication traffic management device is determined, by comparing a depth of the queue to a corresponding threshold for instance. A rate of transfer of communication traffic to the second device, and possibly to particular queues of the second device from corresponding queues of the first device, is controlled based on the threshold status. Transmission of communication traffic from the queues of the second device may thus be in accordance with one communication traffic management scheme, whereas the content of each queue of the second device is controlled according to another communication traffic management scheme used by the first device to transfer communication traffic from its queues, to thereby provide for complex combined communication traffic management.

  • Patent number: 6018518
Abstract: In a cell switched communication system in which a source is connected to a network for transmission of cells to a network destination via a network element having a plurality of ports, said source generating resource cells containing information concerning a bandwidth allocated to the source for transmitting cells, a method of providing flow control at the network element comprises the steps of: (a) detecting a resource cell as it is received at an input port of the network element; (b) routing the resource cell to a resource cell processing means common to all the ports of the network element; (c) modifying information contained in the resource cell concerning the bandwidth allocation for the source on the basis of a determination of current utilisation of ports of the network element; and, (d) passing the modified resource cell to an output port of the network element for subsequent return to the source.
