  • Publication number: 20240094567
Abstract: An optical modulator may include a lower waveguide, an upper waveguide, and a dielectric layer disposed therebetween. When a voltage potential is created between the lower and upper waveguides, these layers form a silicon-insulator-silicon capacitor (also referred to as SISCAP) guide that provides efficient, high-speed optical modulation of an optical signal passing through the modulator. In one embodiment, at least one of the waveguides includes a respective ridge portion aligned at a charge modulation region which may aid in confining the optical mode laterally (e.g., in the width direction) in the optical modulator. In another embodiment, ridge portions may be formed on both the lower and the upper waveguides. These ridge portions may be aligned in a vertical direction (e.g., a thickness direction) so that ridges overlap which may further improve optical efficiency by centering an optical mode in the charge modulation region.

  • Patent number: 5007111
Abstract: A cushion pad arrangement for protecting a person's extremity from compressive and side to side rubbing stresses, as particularly occur at a person's shin, ankle and foot as a result of wearing a boot during use, such as a ski boot during skiing. The cushion pads are formed as a sandwich of serially and parallel connected cells arranged between top and bottom layers, which cells and connecting tubes are formed of a somewhat resilient material, and are selectively filled with air, liquid or gel, depending upon the anticipated forces the pad is intended to cushion, the cushion pads to provide an increasing force dispersion with increasing pressures.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 14, 1989
Date of Patent: April 16, 1991

  • Patent number: 4278176
Abstract: A gradient tube holder and method for securely supporting gradient tubes for observation and access to a gradient therein. The gradient tube holder is pedestal-mounted and includes gradient tube-receiving bores, the bores being formed adjacent an edge so that a longitudinal slot can be formed along the length of the bore. A light shield surrounds the slots to shield the slots against extraneous light thereby enhancing visibility of the gradient tubes.
