  • Patent number: 6467280
Abstract: A diagnostic system includes a controller adapted for coupling to a compressor or electronic stepper regulator valve. The controller produces a variable duty cycle control signal to adjust the capacity of the compressor or valve position of the electronic stepper regulator valve as a function of demand for cooling. The diagnostic system further includes a diagnostic module coupled to the controller for monitoring and comparing the duty cycle with at least one predetermined fault value indicative of a system fault condition and an alert module responsive to the diagnostic module for issuing an alert signal when the duty cycle bears a predetermined relationship to the fault value.

  • Patent number: 6453606
Abstract: A collapsible plant support structure is described which provides a structure wherein a plant may be grown and properly supported. The collapsible plant support structure has three or more vertical members (11) connected to a plurality of rings (12) by guide hubs (18) on the vertical members, thusly providing the collapsible feature of the structure. A vertical member typically is rod-like and extends the entire length of the structure and has connection points (19) set equidistant along the vertical members. The vertical members also include a tapered (20) and angled staking structure to assist in strengthening the structure. The vertical members also have geometrically shaped footplates (20) to assist in placing the structure into any given terrain.

  • Patent number: 6449972
Abstract: A control for a refrigeration system serviced by a special pulse width modulated compressor coupled to a condenser and evaporator. The system can be of the distributed type wherein the condenser and compressor may be coupled to service a group of adjacent refrigeration cases, wherein each case would have its own evaporator. A controller is coupled to a load sensor for producing a variable duty cycle control signal in which the duty cycle is a function of demand for cooling. Moreover, fuzzy logic techniques may be utilized in order to provide self adaptive tuning control for the system.

  • Patent number: 6393852
Abstract: A refrigeration compressor control system includes a controller coupled to a load sensor to produce a variable duty cycle control signal that is a function of demand for cooling. The controller includes a module for establishing a fixed or variable cycle time for the variable duty cycle control signal. The controller is coupled to a compressor to cause the compressor to selectively alternate between first and second states in response to the variable duty cycle control signal, thereby adjusting the capacity of the compressor to the demand for cooling while the compressor is energized.

  • Patent number: 6293767
Abstract: A scroll compressor has a pair of scroll members which compress a fluid as the fluid moves through pockets created by the scroll members. The fluid moves from a suction pressure zone to a discharge pressure zone. A chamber is defined by one of the scroll members. The chamber is in communication with a pocket located between the suction and discharge pressure zone such that an intermediate pressurized fluid is supplied to the chamber through a fluid passageway. The fluid passageway is designed to allow a large flow from the pocket to the chamber and a small flow from the chamber to the pocket. This dual flow capability reduces the pressure pulsation in the chamber. In one embodiment, a capacity control mechanism is associated with the compressor to vary the capacity of the compressor.

  • Patent number: 6213731
Abstract: A scroll compressor includes a capacity modulation system. The capacity modulation system has a piston that is connected to the non-orbiting scroll that disengages the non-orbiting scroll from the orbiting scroll when a pressure chamber is placed in communication with the suction chamber of the compressor. The non-orbiting scroll member moves into engagement with the orbiting scroll when the chamber is placed in communication with the discharge chamber. The engagement between the two scrolls is broken when the pressure chamber is placed in communication with fluid from the suction chamber. A solenoid valve controls the communication between the pressure chamber and the suction chamber. By operating the valve in a pulsed width modulated mode, the capacity of the compressor can be infinitely varied between zero and one hundred percent.

  • Patent number: 6179589
Abstract: A scroll compressor includes a discharge valve assembly for blocking compressed refrigerant flow from the discharge chamber through the scroll members. This blocking of flow results in an increased performance for the scroll compressor by minimizing the recompression volume due to the configuration of the value assembly and thus the elimination of reverse rotation at shut down. The discharge valve assembly includes a valve seat, a disc shaped valve member, a retainer, a spring and a stop secured within a recess formed within the scroll member.

  • Patent number: 6086335
Abstract: A scroll-type machine is disclosed which is particularly well suited for use as a compressor in refrigeration and air conditioning systems and incorporates a unique arrangement for modulating the capacity thereof. In one group of embodiments the capacity of the scroll-type machine is modulated by relative axial movement between the scroll members so as to form a leakage path across the wrap tips and opposed end plates. In another group of embodiments, modulation is achieved by reducing the orbital radius of one of the scroll members to thereby form a leakage path across the flank surfaces of the wraps. In the second group, a plurality of pin members are moveable from a first and second positions. In a first position the plurality of pin members operably enable the scroll members to orbit and in a second position the pin members restrict the orbiting motion of the first scroll members.

  • Patent number: 5580230
Abstract: A scroll type machine is disclosed which incorporates an improved mounting arrangement for the non-orbiting scroll member which mounting arrangement greatly facilitates manufacturing and assembly, effectively prevents radial displacement of the non-orbiting scroll member, and offers the advantages of axial compliance. In one embodiment, the non-orbiting scroll is axially movably secured to a bearing housing by means of a plurality of bolts or bolts and sleeves. In another embodiment a rigid annular ring serves to axially movably secure the non-orbiting scroll to the bearing housing while in a third embodiment a stamped ring is secured to both the non-orbiting scroll and the bearing housing. In another embodiment a two piece main bearing housing includes an integral ring for radially positioning the non-orbiting scroll member and means for securing anti-rotation and axial stop means thereto.

  • Patent number: 5469716
Abstract: A scroll-type compressor has a liquid injection system for injecting liquid into an enclosed space defined by first and second scroll members which engage in cyclical relative orbiting motion, to reduce the temperature of the working fluid. The compressor incorporates a discharge diffuser for reducing the pressure of the working fluid in an enclosed space, so that the liquid may be injected into the enclosed space from a more centrally located injection port than one which would allow liquid injection without the discharge diffuser.
