Patent number: 8322259Abstract: A safety system prevents cutting machine operators from being accidentally carried through the infeed chute into the machine's cutting mechanism. An operator wears a safety device on his wrist and/or ankle and a sensor array mounts on opposing sides of the cutting machine's infeed chute. The sensor array elements are wound in opposite directions and connect in series opposing. The magnetic field of the safety device induces a current in the sensor array as it moves in the proximity of the sensor array. The safety system generates a signal which is proportional to the sum of the induced currents. When the signal exceeds a threshold, the safety system shuts off power to the feed mechanism and/or the cutting blades of the cutting machine, preventing injury to the operator.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2012Date of Patent: December 4, 2012Inventors: Jeff Buchanan, Mark Buchanan

Concept for using software/electronics to calibrate the control system for an automatic transmission
Patent number: 8321096Abstract: A software calibration strategy for calibrating solenoid controlled valves and valve systems in an automatic transmission. The strategy includes identifying a characteristic equation for the valve or valve system that is a mathematical relationship between a current applied to the solenoid and the pressure at the output of the valve or valve system. The valve or valve system is coupled to a test stand that depicts the operation of the valve or valve system in the transmission. Current signals are applied to the valve or valve system, and the output pressures are measured to determine coefficients in the equation using a curve fitting function. The coefficients are then stored in a control unit.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2008Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Borg Warner Inc.Inventors: Eric Christopher Sandstrom, Mark Buchanan, William Vukovich, Melissa Koenig -

Publication number: 20120231178Abstract: A layer of the mixture that contains polymer and conductive particles is applied over a first surface, when the mixture has a first viscosity that allows the conductive particles to rearrange within the layer. An electric field is applied over the layer, so that a number of the conductive particles are aligned with the field and thereafter the viscosity of the layer is changed to a second, higher viscosity, in order to mechanically stabilise the layer. This leads to a stable layer with enhanced and anisotropic conductivity.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 22, 2010Publication date: September 13, 2012Applicant: CONDALIGN ASInventors: Eldrid Svasand, Mark Buchanan, Matti Knaapila, Geir Helgesen

Publication number: 20120224285Abstract: The invention is achieved by applying a layer of the mixture that contains polymer and conductive particles over a first surface, when the mixture has a first viscosity that allows the conductive particles to rearrange within the layer. An electric field is applied over the layer, so that a number of the conductive particles are aligned with the field and thereafter the viscosity of the layer is changed to a second, higher viscosity, in order to mechanically stabilise the layer. Publication number: 20120145315Abstract: A method for forming a body comprising a mixture of a matrix and conductive particles, whereby the conductive particles are formed into aligned conductive pathways in an alignment step by applying an electric field between alignment electrodes and thereafter stabilizing the mixture wherein the conductive particles have a low aspect ratio; and a polymeric composition and method for producing such composition which is curable by UV light to an anisotropic electrically conductive polymer layer, comprising i) providing a non-conductive matrix of a flowable polymer composition having inherent photocurability, ii) adding to matrix conductive particles having low aspect ratio in an amount to allow the concentration of the conductive particles to be maintained at a level lower than the percolation threshold, and iii) placing the formed composition in a receptacle where exposure to UV light is prevented, and a method for establishing an anisotropic electrically conductive, optionally thermally conductiveType: ApplicationFiled: December 15, 2011Publication date: June 14, 2012Applicant: CONDALIGN ASInventors: Matti KNAAPILA, Mark BUCHANAN, Geir HELGESEN

Patent number: 8169908Abstract: A method for discarding perpetually-rejected packets in a fabric-based interconnect having a reliable physical layer is disclosed. A transmitting component keeps a count of the number of negative acknowledgements (NAKs) it receives from the receiving component for packets the transmitting component sends. If the transmitting component receives a number of consecutive NAKs for the same packet that exceeds some pre-determined threshold, the packet is not resent, but is, instead, treated as having been acknowledged, and subsequent packets are allowed to be transmitted. Higher-level processes are then notified of the problem so as to allow the error to be dealt with at a higher level, but without obstructing the flow of packets on the physical layer.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2005Date of Patent: May 1, 2012Assignee: LSI CorporationInventors: David Sluiter, David Thomas, Mark Buchanan, Timothy Thompson, Christopher Paulson

Publication number: 20110110036Abstract: The present invention discloses a cooling fin assembly for Photo Voltaic Solar (PVS) panels providing an improved passive cooling of the PVS panels. Cooling fins as such do provide a good local cooling effect underneath the contacting surface of the fins. However, due to uneven air streams around the cooling fins, the temperature difference across a transversal direction relative to the direction of the fins may be high. This causes a severe degradation of the cooling systems effectiveness, and the resulting output form the PVS panel. According to the disclosure of this invention, an arrangement of transversal heat conducting materials provides a heat bridge providing a thermal relaxation time below a predefined threshold across the whole back side of the PVS panel, thereby improving the overall cooling effect of the PVS panel.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 9, 2009Publication date: May 12, 2011Inventors: Mark Buchanan, Gaute Dominic Magnussen, Lars Dysterud

A pair of actuator control valves (270, 272) is employed to move actuators to engage selective ones of the forward gear sets. Patent number: 7819325Abstract: Calibration data transfer systems are described for use in conjunction with, for example, automotive components such as but not limited to transmission systems. The systems employ devices, such as but not limited to barcode systems such as 2D barcodes, radio frequency identification devices (RFID), digital data storage systems such as CD-ROM's, and the like, to record and/or store data thereon. The data can include information, such as but not limited to solenoid calibration curve coefficients and the like. The data contained on these devices can be accessed by a data retrieval system, such as a scanner, and transferred, for example, to a transmission control unit.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2005Date of Patent: October 26, 2010Assignee: BorgWarner, Inc.Inventors: Mark Buchanan, William Vukovich, Melissa Koenig

Patent number: 7778168Abstract: A method, computer program product, and queuing system for queuing prioritized items (such as network packets), which limits the degree to which higher-priority queue items are blocked by lower priority queue items, is disclosed. A preferred embodiment of the present invention uses a simple first-in-first-out (FIFO) queue as an input queue, along with an output queue corresponding to each packet priority. A strategy is applied at the output queues to guarantee that blocking of high-priority queue items in the input queue will be limited in duration. One disclosed strategy is to enforce a constraint that whenever an output queue of any priority becomes full, the output port will stop accepting packets of any priority until all queues have space for at least one packet of each priority. Another strategy is for the output port to stop accepting packets having priorities greater than or equal to the priority of the full queue.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 2004Date of Patent: August 17, 2010Assignee: LSI CorporationInventors: Arthur G. Rodgers, Mark A. Buchanan
