  • Patent number: 4977576
Abstract: A safety flow stopper in a water-cooled electric arc furnace electrode comprises a bob 16 held in place above a valve seat 12 by a release pin 17 resting on the bottom of the cavity in the nipple 20. If the electrode fails the release pin will no longer support the bob which will seat in the valve seat, shutting off the coolant flow and averting an explosion in the furnace.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 10, 1989
Date of Patent: December 11, 1990
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: Lyman T. Moore, Mark D. Travers
  • Patent number: 4802188
Abstract: In a water cooled electrode assembly for an electric arc steel furnace, a water trap manifold 14 integral with the head assembly at the upper end of said electrode.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 26, 1985
Date of Patent: January 31, 1989
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: Berch Y. Karagoz, Lyman T. Moore, Mark D. Travers, Donald P. Allen
  • Patent number: 4689799
Abstract: A water-cooled electrode for an electric arc furnace is fitted with a copper nipple 10, increased surface area through fluting or drilled or threaded passages for vastly improved cooling, joining the water-cooled and graphite portions of the electrode.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 27, 1985
Date of Patent: August 25, 1987
Inventors: Berch Y. Karagoz, Lyman T. Moore, Joseph M. Rua, Mark D. Travers, Donald P. Allen
  • Patent number: 4513425
Abstract: A composite water-cooled electrode for electric arc steel furnaces comprises a tubular graphite body held in compression by means of tension stressed internal water supply pipe located between a metal header at one end and a hollow metal nipple at the other end of the electrode.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 15, 1983
Date of Patent: April 23, 1985
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: Berch Y. Karagoz, Martin M. Turban, Lyman T. Moore, Mark D. Travers
  • Patent number: 4490824
Abstract: A composite electric arc furnace electrode comprises a heavy-walled tubular graphite body with a sealed inner bore, a hollow nipple, a central coolant supply pipe, and a metal header assembly. If the unit fails, it is disassembled, a new graphite main tube assembled with the metal parts, and the graphite tube consumed in the normal fashion as a tip electrode.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 15, 1983
Date of Patent: December 25, 1984
    Assignee: Great Lakes Carbon Corporation
Inventors: Martin M. Turban, Lyman T. Moore, Mark D. Travers
