  • Publication number: 20220218242
Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods and apparatus for making a determination whether a blood sample is, or is not, infected with a malaria parasite. The determination is made using a trained machine-learning (ML) algorithm. In some aspects, a microfluidic chip is used for the concentration of red blood cells infected with these parasites from uninfected red blood cells, the staining of the blood sample which differentially stains infected and uninfected red blood cells, and holds the sample of interest for imaging. The microfluidic chip is inserted into an optical subsystem that magnifies the image created from transmitted light microscopy. The magnified image is captured with a camera, and a trained ML algorithm assesses if the sample does or does not contain the parasite. Generally, the ML algorithm is executed on a portable computing device such as a smartphone.

  • Patent number: 11249068
Abstract: A non-invasive, continuous, and direct system for detecting the presence of malaria parasites that exploits the paramagnetic properties of hemozoin in red blood cells. An electromagnetic probe (EM probe) is comprised of a dual coaxial coil used to detect iron oxide particles by using sensitive lock-in amplification of detector voltage or phase shift.

  • Patent number: 11238573
Abstract: Devices, methods, and non-transitory program storage devices are disclosed herein to provide improved image processing, the techniques comprising: obtaining an input image and target image data, and then calculating derivatives for the target image data using a regularized derivative kernel operator. In some embodiments, the regularized operator may comprise the following operator: [?1 (1+?)], wherein ? may be a controllable system parameter and preferably is independent of the particular type of image processing being applied to the image. In some embodiments, the techniques may find look-up table (LUT) mappings or analytical functions to approximate the derivative structure of the target image data. Finally, the techniques disclosed herein may generate an output image from the input image based on attempting to closely approximate the calculated derivatives for the target image data. In preferred embodiments, by controlling the mapping, e.g.

  • Patent number: 10780996
Abstract: An apparatus and method to equalize the pressure in multiple tires supported by a single axle or strut of an airplane is shown. A control block connects the pressurized gas to a distribution block and meter. From the distribution block high pressure lines and no-loss chuck valves connect the pressurized gas to the multiple tires. Steps to be followed as programmed in the meter include startup, testing, calibration, setup and finalize. A permanent record of the steps in equalizing tire pressures is maintained.
