  • Patent number: 8195534
Abstract: A system and method for preparing a set of paired identification label based a plurality of characters that identify an inventory item. The method includes a step of assigning a predetermined numerical value to each of the plurality of characters. Mathematical operations are performed on the assigned numerical values to obtain a mapping of the plurality of characters to a corresponding non-textual visual indicator. A label is generated which label includes the plurality of characters and the visual indicator. The visual indicator may be a color or a graphic indicator such as an alignment designation bar or a combination and variation thereof.

  • Publication number: 20110184765
Abstract: A system and method of supplying prepackaged pharmaceutical samples to healthcare providers in the employ of a healthcare organization. A vending machine is provided. The healthcare organization preauthorizes various types of pharmaceutical samples to be stocked within the vending machine. The vending machine is stocked only with the pharmaceutical samples that were preauthorized by the healthcare organization. Although the vending machine is accessible to healthcare providers in a particular office, not all of the prepackaged pharmaceutical samples can be vended by all of the healthcare providers. Rather, each healthcare provider has a sample dispensing authorization that depends upon the healthcare provider's knowledge of the pharmaceuticals. A trackable history is maintained about what pharmaceutical samples were vended, what healthcare provider took the pharmaceutical samples, and what patient was given the pharmaceutical samples.

  • Patent number: 7912578
Abstract: A system and method for conveying regulated pharmaceuticals to a patient in an automated manner. A database is provided that contains information on patients and the prescriptions prescribed to those patients. An automated conveying machine is supplied that contains an inventory of prepackaged pharmaceuticals that can be independently vended. An interface is provided proximate the automated conveying machine. Prescription data is entered into the interface. The prescription data identifies a specific patient and a specific prepackaged pharmaceutical. The prescription data is compared to information in the database for confirmation. The automated conveying machine receives a confirmation signal if the prescription data is valid. If the requested prepackaged pharmaceutical is present within the inventory of said automated conveying machine and the confirmation signal has been received, then the automated conveying machine is activated. Inventory controls are present that prevent the system from overselling.

  • Patent number: 7860604
Abstract: A method for controlling access to and segregating items dispensed from a vending machine having a stock of said items, said method comprising: vending an item only when a control procedure is satisfied; storing a record indicating said vended item has been dispensed; if said vended item is not distributable to an authorized recipient; quarantining said vended item including inserting said vended item into a port on an exterior of said vending machine that conveys said inserted vended item to a secure repository in the interior of said machine; and updating said record to indicate said vended item has been returned to said machine.

  • Patent number: 7860605
Abstract: In one embodiment, a system for controlling access to and segregating dispensable items comprises a vending machine that contains the dispensable items to be vended. The vending machine includes an access control mechanism responsive to selection of one of the dispensable items for causing the vending machine to activate and vend the selected item. Transaction information associated with each of the vended items is stored in memory. The vending machine further includes a port on an exterior of the machine and adapted to receive items previously vended from the vending machine for return. A repository is located on the interior of the machine and operably connected to the port for quarantining the returned items, whereby the returned items are separated from the items to be vended. A sensor may be provided for sensing the returned items and causing the system to update transaction information to indicate that the sensed item has been returned to the machine.

  • Patent number: 7483766
Abstract: A system and method of prescribing and conveying regulated pharmaceuticals. Prepackaged pharmaceuticals are kept in a vending machine. Upon the completion of a patient's diagnosis, a physician may prescribe a regulated pharmaceutical. The physician enters the prescription into a terminal. The prescription is read by a central processing unit that controls the vending machine. The central processing unit identifies the location of the pharmaceutical in the vending machine and awaits a proper vending code. Once a physician enters a prescription into the system, the physician hands the patient an electronic key card. The key card is encoded with the vending code needed to activate the vending machine. The patient carries the key card to the vending machine. If the code on the key card matches the prescription code previously entered by a physician, the vending machine vends the prepackaged pharmaceutical.
