The event log system includes an event log displaying error messages associated with the error events captured within the computer system, and displaying inline error resolution information within each error message corresponding to each respective error event. User community information such as links to wiki topics and forum threads are contextually provided for and inline with individual error log entries. Also, action buttons to help the user resolve errors and problems are also contextually provided, as are surfaced links to domain experts within the user community, such as online chat buttons to them.

Abstract: The present invention concerns methods and apparatus for enabling manual control over selection of a value for at least one operating parameter of a computer system resource. Manual control is enabled by de-coupling a pointer of a graphical indicator and control from an automated system advisor. During automated operation, the automated system advisor selects the value for the parameter of the computer system resource as indicated on a scale of the graphical indicator and control by the pointer. When the pointer of the graphical indicator is under manual control, a user can select the value of the at least one operating parameter of the computer system resource using the pointer of the graphical indicator and control. The present invention also concerns methods and apparatus for disabling manual control over selection of a value for at least one operating parameter of a computer system resource by re-coupling the pointer to an automated system advisor.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a method comprises generating a slider having end values and receiving designation of a range between the end values, or including no more than one of the end values, using controls on the slider. Also, the method includes receiving designation of a subrange within the designated range using the controls on the slider and updating the slider control in response to the receiving steps. In addition, the method includes outputting a digital signal to a graphical display device for graphically depicting the controls of the slider at ends of the range and subrange. Also presented in other embodiments are a computer program product and a system operable to output a slider.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to novel techniques for showing the progress of an automated computer process, particularly through a graphical user interface (GUI). Graphical status displays are employed which show graphical time-based information, such as rate and estimated time to completion, as well as a completion portion of an automated computer process. A remaining time indicator can be shown as a time scale for the graphical completion indicator. Instantaneous and historical rate information may be graphically displayed in various novel displays.

Abstract: An advisement manager is provided. One embodiment includes a processor connected to a memory device. A manager module executing on the processor, and is configured to receive an event signal triggered by an event, store content of the event signal in the memory device, retrieve information for responding to the event from different sources, and transmit the response information to an output device. An interface module is configured to display event information and the response information, and accept a response selection.

Abstract: An apparatus and kit to facilitate installation of hardware and software elements of a physical computer system. Poster media is provided with an ordered list of hardware oriented instructions, and at least one item in the list having software oriented installation instructions. Transportable media is attached to the poster media adjacent to the software oriented instructions to provide both the required software, as well as the timing for the installation at the correct time in the system installation process.

The output module provides the namespace identifiers and the associated computing resource corresponding to each namespace identifier. A graphical user interface includes a window with a file system pane and a fileset pane. The file system pane includes a first tree control that displays the components of the file system. The fileset pane includes a second tree control that displays the filesets. The tree controls are updated in response to user input in either the file system pane or the fileset pane.

Another method includes providing a user with an option to selectively mute up to n-1 applications of n applications, where n>1. In response to the user choosing to selectively mute up to n-1 applications, at least one action is performed in response to requests to play sounds by the selectively muted applications so that the sounds are muted with respect to a sound device.

Abstract: A method, system, and program are provided for managing flexible events within an electronic calendar. A calendaring controller schedules fixed events requiring a fixed time slots and flexible events that are flexible for scheduling over a particular time period for a particular duration, wherein the particular time period is greater than the particular duration. The calendaring controller sets each flexible event at a particular time slot within the particular time period for the particular duration. Responsive to the calendaring controller detecting a request for a new event for an additional time slot overlapping the particular time slot, the calendaring controller repositions the flexible event to at least one other time slot of the particular duration during the particular time period to allow for scheduling the new event during the additional time slot.

Abstract: Non-hierarchical relationship UIs (“topology UIs”) are difficult to scale to hundreds or more items. An embodiment of this invention provides indicators and quick access controls for the nodes in navigation tree that appear more than once in a hierarchy—where a pure hierarchical navigational tree falls short. The navigational tree is structured by grouping all matching nodes together. The display area displays the most frequent and the concatenated labels of the semantically grouped redundant nodes. A set of contextual proximity and similarity information and an exception list are stored in a semantic database which is configurable by system administrators. These navigation area controls and indicators will preemptively handle non-hierarchies directly within the navigation tree.
