  • Patent number: 6237173
Abstract: An articulated foam mattress including a back section and a seat section joined to each other by a hinge section. Both the back section and the seat section are formed from polyurethane foam. The hinge section is formed from visco-elastic foam, commonly referred to as memory foam. The visco-elastic foam hinge section retains its compressed condition as the mattress is folded from the upright position to the seating position. The visco-elastic foam of the hinge section reduces the reflex properties of the mattress to reduce the urge of the mattress to slide off of the furniture frame.

  • Patent number: 5534295
Abstract: Polyurea/polyurethane coatings can be applied in situ to the edges of substrates without the need for adding any additives to increase flowability or moldability. The in situ application utilizes the extremely fast cure time of polyurea/polyurethanes to provide a method for efficiently creating an article with a protected edge coat by spray applying polyurea/polyurethane to wood substrates. The polyurea/polyurethane will adhere solidly to the substrate, and is applied with sufficient thickness to provide resistance to chemical, environmental, or physical stresses perpendicularly and angularly directed at the edge. The method utilizes a spray gun at high temperature and pressure, combining isocyanate and amine components of the polyurea/polyurethane coating at the nozzle and impinging the combined components onto the edge to be treated. The product of this process gives off no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), is odor free, peel resistant, and sterilized.

  • Patent number: 5153952
Abstract: A convertible sofa bed which is convertible to provide a sofa or a bed. The convertible sofa bed has a seat which is hinged to a back and supported by a frame. A pivoting pawl, having a bottom end, is attached to the seat near the hinged point. A notch is provided on the back near the hinge which accepts the pawl when the seat is raised. For example, beginning with the convertible sofa bed in the bed position, lift the front of the seat. As the front of the seat is lifted, the gravitational force influences the pawl to hang in a downward direction. The pawl pivots until the bottom end thereof makes contact with the notch. Once the pawl is engaged, the seat is pressed down creating a tension between the notch and the pawl. By continuing to apply leverage to the seat, the back advances upward forming the sofa configuration.

  • Patent number: 5146640
Abstract: A convertible sofa which is convertible to provide a sofa or a bed. The convertible sofa has a seat which is hinged to a back and supported by a frame. A pivoting pawl having a tapered edge is attached to the seat near the hinged point. Moreover, a step is provided on the back near the hinge which accepts the pawl when the seat is raised. For example, beginning with the convertible sofa in the bed position, lift the front of the seat. As the front of the seat is lifted, the gravitational force influences the pawl to hang in a downward direction. The pawl pivots until the tapered edge makes contact with the step. Once contact is achieved, pressing down on the seat creates a tension between the step and the pawl. By continuing to apply leverage to the seat, the back advances upward forming the sofa configuration. To disengage the pawl from the step, on the front edge of the seat thereby is lifted, relieving the stress on the pawl thus allowing the pawl to freely swing downward loosing contact with the step.
