The reception apparatus includes an input unit and a processor. The input unit receives a channel selection from a user. The processor determines a source of content associated with the channel selection based on at least one virtual channel table stored in a memory. Based on the determined source of content, the processor controls a first communication interface to receive first content or a second communication interface to receive second content. The processor controls the first communication interface to receive the first content when the selected channel is determined to be associated with a first source, and controls the second communication interface to receive the second content when the selected channel is determined to be associated with a second source.

Abstract: A reception apparatus, method, computer program, and information providing apparatus for providing one or more alert services. The reception apparatus includes a receiver, a display interface, an input unit, and a processor. The receiver receives a notification of an alert service. The display interface presents the notification of the alert service on a display. Further, the input unit receives a request from a user of the reception apparatus to subscribe to the alert service. In response to receiving the subscription request, the processor registers a location of new content information associated with the alert service in a memory. Further, the processor determines whether new content corresponding to the alert service is available based on the new content information. When the new content is determined to be available, the processor downloads the new content and causes the display interface to present a pop-up alert based on the new content.

Abstract: A method, computer program, and reception apparatus, and information providing apparatus. The method includes receiving content from a content source, and displaying the received content on a display. A first trigger is extracted from closed caption data associated with the received content. The reception apparatus retrieves a trigger parameters table (TPT) based on the extracted first trigger. The TPT includes at least one event associated with one or a combination of a trigger identifier and a first media time of the received content, and is stored in a memory of the reception apparatus. Further, the reception apparatus processes the event based on one or a combination of a second trigger including the trigger identifier and the first media time equaling a current media time of the received content.

Abstract: A method, computer program, and reception apparatus, and information providing apparatus. The method includes receiving a trigger parameters table (TPT). The TPT is associated with a triggered declarative object (TDO) and includes at least one parameter associated with a trigger event. The TPT is stored in a first memory of the reception apparatus. The TDO is executed by a processor of the reception apparatus and is stored in a second memory of the reception apparatus. The reception apparatus receives a trigger associated with the trigger event. At least one parameter associated with the trigger event is retrieved from the TPT based on information included in the trigger. Further, a function is performed based on the retrieved at least one parameter.

Abstract: According to one embodiment of the invention, a method for creating and/or altering a video bookmark is described. The method comprises an operation of processing a request from a downloaded scripted object to create a video bookmark. The video bookmark may be information that is used for performing an action involving additional information related to the video content being played at a time of the request. Thereafter, the video bookmark is created based on the request.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a computer-implemented method for a digital broadcast system comprises an operation of receiving and processing an electronic questionnaire from at least one service provider of the digital broadcast system by a receiver. For instance, the electronic questionnaire has a first data structure that, when processed by the receiver, generates for display a plurality of questions. Thereafter, the method comprises an operation of acquiring answers to the electronic questionnaire in the receiver. The answers are used in filtering content subsequently downloaded to the receiver.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method of controlling a virtual shopping center can include: receiving a user input at a query input engine; aggregating an output from the query input engine with a user preference, such as a purchase history or other expressed interest, to form a search criteria; searching a database using the search criteria; and displaying an image associated with a matching product or service resulting from the search of the database.

Abstract: A region rating table includes a number of rating dimensions and a number of rating levels. The rating dimensions may be identified by an index. Also, one or more rating level tags are added to the rating levels. The rating level tags identify each rating level within a rating dimension uniquely. The rating region table may be downloaded to the receiver for the user to set blocking preferences. A content advisory description may be specified. When content is received, it is analyzed to determine if it should be blocked based on the dimension index and the rating level tag. If the content is acceptable, it is not blocked, and if it is not acceptable, then it is blocked. Using the rating level tag to identify a rating level within a dimension allows changes to be made to the region rating table without creating unwanted blocking behavior and viewer confusion.

Abstract: According to one embodiment of the invention, a computer-implemented method for a digital broadcast system is described. The method involves an operation of receiving an electronic questionnaire that includes a plurality of questions registered to avoid duplication of any one of the plurality of questions. The electronic questionnaire, when processed by a receiver of the digital broadcast system, generates for display a plurality of questions. The receiver acquires answers to the electronic questionnaire, where the answers are used in adjusting content subsequently downloaded to the receiver.

Abstract: According to one embodiment of the invention, a computerized method for reporting events from a television that supports transmission and playback of digital content in accordance with an Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standard. The method comprises downloading a triggered declarative object (TDO), which includes a reporting script, for storage within a digital receiver of the television. Thereafter, information associated with one or more detected events that occur during playback of the digital content is recorded and subsequently, upon execution of the reporting script, is output over a communication path separate from a communication path of the received digital content.

Abstract: A system and method for distributing auxiliary data embedded in video data includes a content source that embeds the auxiliary data into the video data. The content source then encodes the video data together with the auxiliary data to create a distribution multiplex including compressed video data. A decoder receives and decompresses the distribution multiplex to reproduce the video data with the auxiliary data embedded. A television or other device then detects and extracts the auxiliary data from the video data. The television or other device processes the auxiliary data to support a variety of possible interactive applications including displaying a synchronized widget on a display of the television.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for broadcasting and receiving a terrestrial broadcast signal containing emergency alert information in machine-readable format. The method includes the steps of scanning a Transport Stream associated with the terrestrial broadcast signal. The Transport Stream contains one or more Transport Stream packets and a plurality of tables, which are parsed to identify a channel having a type specified as containing emergency alert information. An MPEG-2 program having said emergency alert information may then be acquired for delivery through a terrestrial broadcast receiver.

Abstract: Particular embodiments provide recommendations based on community affiliation. In one embodiment, the method determines a query from a target user. A community in which the target user is a member is then determined. The community may include a plurality of members that have joined the community based on a common interest. User activity information is analyzed for at least a portion of the members of the community to determine a recommendation for the query. The user activity information is determined to be of interest to the target user based on the target user's membership in the community. For example, based on the user's membership in the community, recommendations as to what other members in the community liked can be correlated to the query for the target user. Thus, the recommendation may be provided to the user based on what other users in the community liked.

A revocation list is also received at the module. The method includes determining whether the host device associated with the module is on the list. If so, the conditional access module will not descramble the content.

Abstract: A method of transmitting/receiving a broadcasting signal and a broadcasting receiver are disclosed. A rating region table (RRT) including a rating value identifier identifying rating information is stored, and, when broadcasting contents are received, the rating value identifier is obtained from a descriptor (or service discovery information) including the rating information of the contents. Then, the received broadcasting contents can be blocked according to the rating value identifier obtained from the descriptor and the rating value identifier of the RRT. Accordingly, although the RRT is changed, the broadcasting contents can be conveniently blocked using the unchanged rating value identifier.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method of controlling data translation between communities can include: receiving data from a first community in a second community, where the data has a tag associated therewith; searching a metadata dictionary in the second community for an entry corresponding to the tag; translating the received data to provide translated data using a community definition from the entry corresponding to the tag; and outputting the translated data to the second community.

Abstract: While a user is using the electronic device, user interaction information for keystrokes, button pushes, and activation of functional controls may be recorded. The user interaction information is stored and when the electronic device is connected to a network, the user interaction information is sent over the network to a user interface analyzer. The user interface analyzer analyzes the user interaction information to determine patterns of usage regarding a hierarchy of menu items for the user interface. The analysis may show that a user interface may be improved for better usability. The user interface on the electronic device may be dynamically changed to alter the menu hierarchy, or the analysis may be used to improve future generations of products. For example, menu items may be positioned such that the user can more easily access menu items that are used more frequently.
