Patent number: 7176794Abstract: Some embodiments of the invention include a television system having an internal microphone for implementing a voice-messaging system. Using the microphone, the television system detects a message spoken by a user of the television system, and records the message to a memory. Some embodiments of the invention may also record metadata about the message. Embodiments of the invention alert an intended recipient of the message using the audio output or video output of the television system, and subsequently reproduce the message using the audio output of the television system. Other embodiments of the invention are described in the specification and the claims.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2004Date of Patent: February 13, 2007Assignee: Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc.Inventors: Jon A. Publication number: 20040194140Abstract: An intelligent, interactively maneuverable interface display of current electronic programming guide (EPG) textual information presentable on a user's television screen. The display, which is organized as a context display, includes keyword-sensitized text, and a virtual, user-employable navigation tool, such as a scrollbar tool, which, via a hand-held remote control device, enables a user quickly, intuitively, and with appropriate user-specific focus to locate programming material of special interest. Display information which is thus accessed by user manipulation of this tool is arranged in a sensible hierarchical manner so as to define different levels of focus-resolution which relate to different “positions” of a handle in the scrollbar tool.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2003Publication date: September 30, 2004Applicant: Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc.Inventors: Vishnu Kumar Shivaji Rao, Mark G. Hanley, Gary Feather

Publication number: 20040194139Abstract: A system, a methodology and a related, on-screen, interactive user interface which displays electronic programming guide (EPG) text, with highlighted and user-selectable keywords that enable focused, precision informational navigation through the available EPG database. The display also presents different categories of virtual tools that can be employed by a user for navigating purposes, accessible via a suitable remote, hand-held control device.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2003Publication date: September 30, 2004Applicant: Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc.Inventors: Vishnu Kumar Shivaji Rao, Mark G. Hanley, Gary Feather

Publication number: 20040083467Abstract: A system and method are provided for efficiently executing intermediate code. The method comprises: receiving an application generated in an intermediate code such as JAVA, .NET, or VisualBasic; automatically compiling the intermediate code into native machine code; saving the native machine code in permanent memory; receiving a command to execute the application; accessing the native machine code from permanent memory; and, executing the application using the native machine code. Some aspects of the method further comprise: tagging the native machine code in permanent memory as a native machine code version of the application; and, in response to receiving a command to execute the application, checking the permanent memory for a native machine code version of the application. Then, accessing native machine code from permanent memory includes accessing native machine code if a native machine code version of the application is identified in permanent memory.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 29, 2002Publication date: April 29, 2004Applicant: Sharp Laboratories of America, Inc.Inventors: Mark G. Hanley, Ronald D. Braithwaite

Patent number: 5986369Abstract: An electromechanical actuator maintains an external device to which the actuator is connected at an operating position when power is applied to the actuator, and allows the external device to return to a default position when the power is removed. Included in the actuator is a housing and an output coupling rotatably mounted thereon. The output coupling is configured to be connected to the external device and displaces the external device between the operating position and the default position. A driving device is mounted in the housing for providing a torque to the output coupling to displace the external device between the default position and the operating position when the driving device is energized. Also provided is a torque transmitting device for transmitting and changing the torque from the driving device to the output coupling. The torque transmitting device is cooperatively engaged to and is located between the driving device and the output coupling.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1997Date of Patent: November 16, 1999Assignee: Siemens Building Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Mark G. Hanley, Guy P. Caliendo, Dean B. Anderson

Patent number: 5806925Abstract: A breathable and washable protective seat cover for automobile seats or the like which comprises a multi-layer construction that has been configured to form a pocket at one end that fits over the upper end of the seat and an elongated section that loosely covers the front surfaces of the seat. Layers comprise an absorbent upper layer and a vapor permeable liquid-blocking lower layer. The upper layer wicks moisture away from the occupant and readily releases it through evaporation, the lower layer provides a breathable property while blocking liquid water, sweat, mud, and the like; thereby protecting the underlying upholstery and providing a comfortable seating surface. The seat cover materials and loose fitting geometry facilitates and withstands frequent installation-removal-laundering cycles. The lower polymeric membrane layer additionally provides a rubbery texture that grips the car seat upholstery to prevent movement or bunching of the seat cover when an individual enters the seat.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1996Date of Patent: September 15, 1998Inventor: Mark G. Patent number: 5460202Abstract: A three-way valve having a valve body with an internal output chamber. A supply means is in fluid communication with the output chamber for providing a source of fluid to pressurize the output chamber and thereby obtain a desired device output signal. An exhaust means in fluid communication with the output chamber provides a passage for the fluid to vent from the output chamber out to atmosphere. An output means, also in fluid communication with the output chamber, is included for directing the device output signal from the output chamber to a pneumatic device. A single bending element selectively actuates the supply means or the exhaust means to obtain a predetermined pressure value to be maintained by the valve. The bending element is positioned adjacent and between the supply and exhaust means.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1993Date of Patent: October 24, 1995Assignee: Landis & Gyr Powers, Inc.Inventors: Mark G. Hanley, Guy P. Caliendo

Patent number: 5207737Abstract: An electro-pneumatic pressure transducer is provided with a valve body assembly having a supply chamber, an exhaust chamber and an intake assembly to provide a source of fluid to the transducer. The transducer also has an output assembly directing the fluid to a pneumatic actuator. The valve body further includes a supply valve assembly and an exhaust valve assembly having bender elements adjustably mounted to the valve body with respect to nozzles. A manifold structure is included for fluidly connecting the supply valve, the exhaust valve and the output assemblies. A pressure sensor is used to measure the pressure in the valve body and is responsive to increases or decreases of the pneumatic pressure in the valve body. A monitor is used to monitor the power source and to generate a failure mode signal when the power source fails to supply a predetermined level of power.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1992Date of Patent: May 4, 1993Assignee: Landis & Gyr Powers, Inc.Inventors: Mark G.
