Patent number: 6059904Abstract: A method combining isothermal and high retained strain forging is described for Ni-base superalloys, particularly those which comprise a mixture of .gamma. and .gamma.' phases, and most particularly those which contain at least about 40 percent by volume of .gamma.'. The method permits the manufacture of forged articles having a fine grain size in the range of 20 .mu.m or less. The method comprises the selection of a fine-grained forging preform formed from a Ni-base superalloy, isothermal forging to develop the shape of the forged article, subsolvus forging to impart a sufficient level of retained strain to the forged article to promote subsequent recrystallization and avoid critical grain growth, and annealing to recrystallize the microstructure. The method permits the forging of relatively complex shapes and avoids the problem of critical grain growth. Patent number: 6043445Abstract: An apparatus for sorting fragments of titanium-based sponge on the basis of color is disclosed. The apparatus captures at least one color image of each fragment, inserts relevant color values from the image into an automated color-sorting system to determine the color of the fragment, and segregates the fragments according to color or range-of-color, by way of a physical segregation apparatus controlled by the color sorting system. The color sorting systems usually involve the conversion of color images from the fragments into color signals, which are in turn transformed into color values. The color images are usually represented by a pattern of pixels. The color values are automatically compared to values, which are part of a look-up table based on data sets, which embrace acceptable or rejectable color values. The cold finger bottom pour spout comprises a plurality of copper segments having gaps. The method involves the solid-state bonding of the two structures, which can be carried out by a variety of techniques, such as inertia-welding or explosive-welding. The molybdenum-based alloy may be a TZM-type material, while the more ductile alloy may be tantalum-based, niobium-based, or nickel-based, for example. This method is especially useful in the manufacture of x-ray devices, such as those which include rotary anode assemblies. As one illustration, the method can be used to provide a very strong joint between a target formed from a molybdenum alloy and an insert formed from a tantalum alloy. A base plate is sized to have a perimeter to engage the crucible bottom for attachment thereto. A central drain extends through the base plate for draining by gravity the melt from the reservoir. Induction heating coils are mounted below the base plate lower surface for heating the melt through the slots. Patent number: 5683653Abstract: A system for the recycling of overspray powder during spray forming is provided. The system involves providing a refining vessel to contain an electroslag refining layer floating on a layer of molten refined metal. An ingot of unrefined metal is lowered into the vessel into contact with the molten electroslag layer. A current is passed through the slag layer to the ingot to cause surface melting at the interface between the ingot and the electroslag layer. As the ingot is surface melted at its point of contact with the slag, droplets of the unrefined metal are formed and these droplets pass down through the slag and are collected in a body of molten refined metal beneath the slag. The refined metal is held within a cold hearth. At the bottom of the cold hearth, a cold finger orifice permits the withdrawal of refined metal from the cold hearth apparatus.
