  • Publication number: 20050224046
Abstract: An apparatus and method for retarding an engine having a cylinder with an exhaust valve, an intake valve, an intake stroke, an exhaust stroke, a compression stroke and an expansion stroke. The apparatus includes an exhaust brake and a compression release brake. The exhaust brake includes a variable exhaust restrictor, a pressure sensor for sensing pressure of exhaust gases and a controller operatively connected to the pressure sensor and to the exhaust restrictor. Opening of the exhaust restrictor is adjusted during operation of the apparatus so exhaust pressure is sufficient to cause exhaust valve float prior to bottom dead center of intake strokes of the cylinder, thereby enhancing operation of the compression release brake.

  • Patent number: 6189504
Abstract: An engine valve actuation system is disclosed, which is capable providing compression release engine braking in combination with exhaust gas recirculation while maintaining main exhaust and main intake valve events of constant magnitude during both positive power and engine braking. The system is also capable of providing a constant level of desired overlap between main exhaust and main intake valve events during both positive power and engine braking. The system may provide the foregoing functions by using first and second valve actuation subsystems to provide the full spectrum of exhaust valve motions. Both the first and second subsystems may receive an input motion from a valve train element. The first subsystem operates only when the engine braking system is enabled. The second subsystem operates both during positive power and during engine braking.

  • Patent number: 6170474
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine braking system which may provide compression release braking and/or exhaust braking, methods and systems are disclosed of controlling the overlap between an exhaust gas recirculation event and an intake valve event to optimize engine braking at various engine operating speeds. Optimization may be achieved by selectively advancing and retarding the opening and closing of an exhaust valve for exhaust gas recirculation. The opening and closing of the exhaust valve may be carried out responsive to the monitored levels of such engine parameters as: exhaust manifold pressure, exhaust manifold temperature, cylinder pressure, and/or cylinder temperature. Various engine parameters may be monitored. Control of exhaust gas recirculation may be responsive thereto, such that a monitored parameter does not exceed a predetermined level.

  • Patent number: 5996550
Abstract: An internal combustion engine may include a hydraulic linkage used to transfer motion from a valve train element, such as a cam, to an engine valve. Method and apparatus for selectively limiting the motion transferred by the hydraulic linkage from the valve train element to the engine valve are disclosed. The hydraulic linkage may comprise means for resetting or clipping the displacement of the engine valves into the engine cylinder following a compression release event. The hydraulic linkage may also limit the displacement of the engine valves into the engine cylinder for main exhaust and/or other valve events, as well as limit the overlap between a main exhaust valve event and an intake valve event.

  • Patent number: 5462025
Abstract: The relatively complex and expensive "control valves", which are conventionally used in certain compression release engine brakes for such purposes as filling, isolating, and venting the high pressure portions of the hydraulic circuits in the engine brake, are eliminated and more direct means are provided for performing these functions. In brakes having a mechanism for resetting each slave piston, the high pressure portion of the circuit is filled through a selectively openable aperture in the slave piston. In brakes having a mechanism for automatically adjusting slave piston lash or for limiting ("clipping") the forward stroke of the slave piston, high pressure circuit fill is provided through a simple check valve. In systems in which hydraulic fluid is temporarily displaced from the high pressure circuit, a simple accumulator is provided to store hydraulic fluid for quick refill. A single such accumulator may replace multiple control valves.
