    Abstract: The invention encompasses a non-naturally occurring clade C human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) 1086.C envelope (ENV) SOSIP trimer protein. This trimer protein contains broadly neutralizing epitopes and epitopes that induce anti-V1/V2 antibodies and thus is an immunogen for creation of HIV-1 vaccines. The invention also includes prophylactic or therapeutic vaccine compositions/kits and methods for using the trimer protein as a component of a vaccine against HIV-1 infection.
