Patent number: 9433917Abstract: A process for producing alkylated hydrocarbons includes the steps of: (a) combining a first feed stream comprising an olefin and an isoparaffin with an alkylation catalyst stream in a first alkylation reactor, (b) removing heat of reaction from the first alkylation reactor, (c) passing an effluent of the first alkylation reactor to a first reaction zone of a second alkylation reactor operating adiabatically to thereby form a first reaction zone effluent, (d) passing the first reaction zone effluent to a second reaction zone of the second alkylation reactor for mixture with a second feed stream comprising an olefin and an isoparaffin, and (e) passing an effluent of the second alkylation reactor to a settler for separation into a hydrocarbon stream and an alkylation catalyst effluent stream. An alkylation unit for carrying out the process is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2015Date of Patent: September 6, 2016Assignee: UOP LLCInventors: Mark L. Gravley, Martyn E. Pfile

Patent number: 4824643Abstract: A carbon black reactor is characterized by a converging zone, a throat, a first reaction zone and a second reaction zone serially connected. Oil can be injected both upstream and downstream of the throat. Annular walls connect the throat with the first reaction zone and the first reaction zone with the second reaction zone.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1987Date of Patent: April 25, 1989Assignee: Phillips Petroleum CompanyInventors: Mark L. Gravley, E. Webb Henderson

Patent number: 4765964Abstract: A new reactor for the production of carbon black, a method for the production of carbon black, and a carbon black are disclosed. The carbon blacks are characterized by a surface area preferably in the range of 70 to 150 m.sup.2 /g and "G" values of either less than 1.20 or greater than 1.85, corresponding to very narrow or very broad aggregate size distributions, respectively. The reactor is preferably for axial flow of combustion gases and is characterized by serial arrangement of a cylindrical combustion zone, a frustoconical converging zone, a throat, an abrupt diverging zone and a cylindrical pyrolysis zone. In certain aspects of the invention, the combustion gases are formed by combusting low BTU fuel and forcing these gases through the throat at a velocity approaching Mach 1. In one method of carbon black production, the feedstock is introduced into the converging zone. In another method, it is introduced as a spray.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1985Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Assignee: Phillips Petroleum CompanyInventors: Mark L. Gravley, E. Webb Henderson
