  • Patent number: 8944768
Abstract: A composite turbine blade and a method of manufacture thereof is disclosed. The composite turbine blade comprises a turbine blade portion comprising a first material and a first tip plate comprising a second material. The turbine blade portion has an exterior wall and an interior wall surrounding a hollow interior cavity, and a top surface extending from the exterior wall to the interior wall bounding an orifice that is fluidly connected to the hollow interior cavity. The first tip plate may be attached to the turbine blade along the top surface and extending from proximate the exterior wall of the turbine blade across the orifice to cover the orifice.

  • Publication number: 20100260932
Abstract: A method for applying a seal strip to a surface of a turbine component by accelerating solid particles to a velocity sufficient to cause the solid particles to plastically deform and bond to the surface and each other when impacted on the surface, and impacting the solid particles on the surface so as to cause the solid particles to deform and bond to the surface and each other to form the seal strip on the surface.

  • Patent number: 6676004
Abstract: A friction stir welding tool for welding high-strength materials with one or more of the following features: 1) a curved transition geometry structure at the shoulder face and probe interface; 2) a tool material selected on the basis of an ultimate tensile strength determined at or above the temperature of the tool processing temperature; 3) a compressive stress at the point of crack fatigue introduced by mechanical or chemical means; and 4) a threaded probe with a) a major to minor thread diameter ratio that increases toward the distal end of the probe and/or b) with a curved thread root.

  • Publication number: 20010001042
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for depositing braze alloy on a surface of a component that will be subsequently joined to a second component. In one form a braze alloy is sprayed by a thermal process. The braze alloy is sprayed in such a fashion that substantially all of the powder braze alloy is unmolten, but is heated to a state deformable enough to bond to the surface. One form of the spraying operation utilizes a High Velocity Oxygen Fuel spray gun.
