  • Publication number: 20130322385
Abstract: The various embodiments include methods implemented by a first mobile device for updating presence information for a second mobile device stored in memory of the first mobile device when the first mobile device determines that a calculated update quantification exceeds a particular threshold value. In an embodiment, the first mobile device may select one channel from a plurality of available communication channels in response to determining that the update quantification exceeds a threshold value. In a further embodiment, the first mobile device may update the presence information of the second mobile device via that selected channel.

  • Patent number: 8515336
Abstract: Disclosed are apparatus and methods operable to distribute targeted content. Additionally, disclosed are corresponding apparatus and methods operable to selectively choose and cache selected ones from among the distributed targeted content, and to further choose ones from among the cached content to present on a device. In some aspects, selective caching of content may be based upon a match between predetermined content attribute information and predetermined profile information. Further, in some aspects, an indicator is operable to trigger the selective inclusion of one or more of the cached content in a presentation of other content, which may be based on a match between a desired content attribute associated with the indicator and the respective predetermined content attribute information of the cached content.

  • Patent number: 8477606
Abstract: A service for Public Safety (PS) and Law Enforcement (LE) users on commercial wireless networks which assure them access to packet data services. The service request is application based. The applications that are for official use, by the PS/LE users, could have a reserved priority level associated with them. The reserved priority level could be higher than a normal commercial user. The network could use the priority to distinguish users, and dynamically allocate and optimize network resources. The network could use priority level information to perform access, admission, and congestion control. The PS/LE user could use the official applications while on duty and un-official ones while off duty, thus, additionally freeing up network resources. The PS/LE users could then use advanced commercial packet data services, without the need for a private network, while at the same time making it feasible for commercial networks.

  • Publication number: 20130024473
Abstract: An embodiment is directed to displaying information to a user of a communications device. The communications device receives a query including a social parameter, a temporal parameter and a spatial parameter relative to the user that are indicative of a desired visual representation of a set of data objects. The communications device determines degrees to which the social, temporal and spatial parameters of the query are related to each of the set of data objects in social, temporal and spatial dimensions, respectively. The communications device displaying a first visual representation of at least a portion of the set of data objects to the user based on whether the determined degrees of relation in the social dimension, temporal dimension and spatial dimension satisfy the respective parameters of the query.

  • Patent number: 8346211
Abstract: Embodiments are directed to managing a prepaid server-arbitrated group communication session within a wireless communications system. A server receives, from a session originator, a request to setup a prepaid group communication session with at least one session target, the prepaid group communication session requiring each session participant to have an available prepaid account balance above a threshold level. The server sends a query to an online charging system to determine whether at least the session originator has a prepaid account with an available balance at least equal to the threshold level. The server initiates setup of the requested prepaid group communication session without waiting to receive a response to the query, thereby reducing latency associated with set-up of the prepaid group communication session.

  • Publication number: 20120322421
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to recording voice data transmissions between mobile communication devices. An embodiment of the disclosure receives, at a first mobile communication device, an indication that a subsequent voice transmission segment may or may not be recorded by at least one other mobile communication device, and transmits, from the first mobile communication device, an indication to said at least one other mobile communication device that the subsequent voice transmission segment may or may not be recorded. Another embodiment receives an indication from at least one other mobile communication device that a subsequent voice transmission segment may or may not be recorded by said mobile communication device, and if the received indication indicates that the subsequent voice transmission segment may be recorded, records at least a portion of the subsequent voice transmission segment, and stores the recorded portion in a memory associated with said mobile communication device.

  • Publication number: 20120295617
Abstract: In an embodiment, network information associated with a plurality of user equipments (UEs) is determined by an application server. For example, the network information can include information indicative of whether the respective UEs are connected to fast-response networks or slow-response networks. The application server receives a request from an originating UE to initiate a communication session to at least one target UE among the plurality of UEs. The application server selectively requests the originating UE to extend a wait timer based at least in part upon the determined network information for the at least one target UE, wherein expiration of the wait timer prompts the originating UE to fail the communication session. The originating UE receives the extension request from the application server and extends the wait timer such that call failure due to wait timer expiration is delayed and/or avoided.

  • Patent number: 8284737
Abstract: A system and method for minimizing latency for direct group communications, such as push-to-talk (PTT) calls, among a group of wireless telecommunication devices on a wireless telecommunication network. The wireless telecommunication device has a dormant state without an open dedicated traffic channel for communications therefrom and an active state in which the wireless devices opens a dedicated traffic channel for an outgoing communication from the wireless telecommunication device, to include a direct communication stream. Either the wireless telecommunication device or an intermittent communication server for group communication streams can buffer the initial communication data of a group communication stream while the sending and/or receiving wireless telecommunication device changes from a dormant state to an active state with an open dedicated traffic channel.

  • Publication number: 20110314139
Abstract: In an embodiment, a secondary communication terminal (CT) executes a client application to engage in a client application session (CAS), the secondary CT configured to connect to a primary CT over a local wireless connection (LWC), the primary CT having a higher-quality user interface environment as compared to the secondary CT. The secondary CT establishes the LWC with the primary CT during the CAS and, responsive to the establishment, negotiates with the primary CT to selectively transition the CAS to the primary CT. Alternatively, the primary CT executes the client application before the establishment and negotiates with the secondary CT to selectively transition the CAS to the secondary CT. In another embodiment, the primary CT hosts the CAS while the LWC is established with the secondary CT. Then, upon disconnection of the LWC, the secondary AT selectively transitions the CAS to the secondary CT.

  • Patent number: 8077634
Abstract: A system and method for providing group communication services. Each of a plurality of communication devices coverts information signals into data packets suitable for transmission over a data network, such as the Internet. The data packets are transmitted through the data network to a communications manager. The communications manager acts as a configurable switch, allowing communications from any communication device to be routed to the plurality of communication devices. The communications manager further allows users of other communication systems and devices to participate in group communications with each other.

  • Patent number: 8064450
Abstract: A system and method for enabling a wireless communication device to register a temporary public IP address assigned to the device by a network access translation module, when the device is initially informed only of a private, non-routable IP address that has been assigned to it. In one embodiment, the device sends a “blind” registration message to an SIP server, with the private IP address of the device being translated to the public IP address by the NAT and with the SIP server registering the “originator” address in the header. In another embodiment, a registration server detects a message indicating the public IP address and sends the public IP address back to the device, so that the device can conventionally register the address with the SIP server.
