Abstract: A conveyor belt construction is disclosed comprising at least two layers of carded nonwoven material that are needled together to form the carcass. A first layer of nonwoven material is carded so that a substantial portion of the staple fibers are oriented in a first direction. The second layer of nonwoven material is carded so that a substantial portion of the staple fibers are oriented in a second direction, which is substantially perpendicular to the first direction. The two layers of material are then layered on each other and needled together to form a dual layer belt carcass. The carcass is then impregnated with an elastomer such as polyvinyl chloride. The strength of the belt in the longitudinal and transverse directions may be adjusted by adjusting the weight ratio of the nonwoven layers. A method for manufacturing the multi-layer nonwoven belt is also disclosed.
