    Abstract: Disclosed is a dumbbell to be used during a weight lifting exercise program. The dumbbell includes a handle assembly and a pair of collars connected at opposite sides of the assembly. First and second sets of weight plates are detachably connected to each other and to the pair of collars. Each weight plate has an electric motor carried in a cavity formed therein. The dumbbell is seated in a portable dumbbell tray which includes a touch activated display at which a user can enter a predetermined weight to be lifted by the dumbbell during his exercise. The dumbbell tray also has a processor and a motor controller by which the electric motors of respective weight plates are selectively activated to cause the weight plates to be connected together to correspond with the weight entered by the user at the display.

    Abstract: A weight plate having a detachable locking cartridge by which the weight plate is releasably connected to a lifting element (e.g., a center post) whereby one or more weight plates carried by the lifting element may be lifted by a user. The weight plate also has a plate body with a central bore in which to receive the lifting element. In one embodiment, the detachable locking cartridge is mounted flush against one side (e.g., the bottom) of the weight plate body so as to lie entirely external to the plate body. In an alternate embodiment, the detachable locking cartridge includes a stabilizer extension that is received within a cavity recessed in the one side of the plate body. The detachable locking cartridge includes a manually-accessible toggle lever switch arm that is adapted to rotate within a housing of the cartridge between locked and unlocked positions to thereby control the displacement of a locking pin relative to the lifting element within the central bore of the plate body.

The weight plates are stacked in face-to-face alignment one above the other. A weight plate connector is affixed to the first weight plate atop the stack. The apparatus includes a frame and a pair of guide bars that are pivotally connected between a side of the frame and the weight plate connector. A cable communicates with the first weight plate atop the stack by way of the weight plate connector. A pulling force applied to the cable causes the first weight plate and any other weight plates that are detachably interconnected to the first weight plate to be displaced in a linear (i.e., vertical) lifting path. At the same time, the pair of guide bars will rotate relative to the frame through a circular path.
