  • Publication number: 20120165639
Abstract: A method for storing data at a continuous glucose monitor is presented. The method includes measuring the blood glucose level of the patient. The method also includes receiving a plurality of physical attributes related to the glucose level of the patient. The method further includes determining calibration data based on the measured blood glucose level and at least one of the plurality of physical attribute samples, the calibration data configured to allow the handheld diabetes managing device to determine the estimated glucose level of the patient based on the plurality of physical attribute samples. Finally, the method includes transmitting the calibration data from the handheld diabetes managing device to the continuous glucose monitor for storage at the continuous glucose monitor. The calibration data and plurality of physical attribute samples can be retrieved by a separate device to determine an estimated glucose level of the patient.

  • Publication number: 20120165728
Abstract: A private extension of the IEEE 11073 standard for enabling pass-thru communication between a external computing device and a medical device via a diabetes management device is disclosed herein. Within this context, a diabetes management system for configured to allow pass thru communication is described. The system includes a diabetes management device in communication with a external computing device and the first medical device. A pass-thru module of the diabetes management device uses a set of pass-thru commands for establishing a pass-thru communication path and enabling communication between the external computing device and the first medical device, and wherein the set of pass-through commands is defined in compliance with a communication protocol defined in accordance with IEEE standard 11073-20601.

  • Publication number: 20120095314
Abstract: A handheld diabetes management device having a database management system is disclosed. The device comprises a plurality of input modules, including a blood glucose reader, a user interface, a communications interface, and a continuous blood glucose input module. The input modules output data used to generate data records of different record types. The device further comprises N databases, each database having a different frequency range associated thereto, wherein the new record is stored in a particular database of the N databases based on the frequency range of the particular database and the frequency of the particular record type, and N is an integer greater than 1. The device further includes a database operation module that performs database operations on the N databases. The database management system provides increased reliability in the keeping of records on which medically important decisions are made.

  • Publication number: 20120095393
Abstract: A handheld diabetes managing device that provides a secure and efficient communication link between an insulin pump and an external computing device. The handheld diabetes managing device can include a blood glucose meter, a processor and first and second communication modules. The handheld diabetes managing device can be configured to deliver data between an insulin pump and an external computing device over a secure communication path without a direct communication link between the insulin pump and the external computing device. The secure communication path can include a first secure bidirectional communication link between the handheld diabetes managing device and the insulin pump and a second secure bidirectional communication link between the handheld diabetes managing device and the external computing device.

  • Publication number: 20120095311
Abstract: A handheld diabetes management device having a plurality of communication modules for communicating with a plurality of medical devices via a shared antenna or multiple antennas, where the handheld diabetes management device includes a first communication module, a second communication module, and an arbitration module. The first communication module selectively communicates in a first frequency band with an insulin infusion pump external to the handheld diabetes management device via a first antenna using a first wireless communication protocol. The second communication module selectively communicates in the first frequency band with a continuous glucose monitor external to the handheld diabetes management device via a second antenna or the first antenna using a second wireless communication protocol.

  • Publication number: 20120093311
Abstract: A method for pairing a handheld diabetes managing device with an insulin pump for secure wireless communication with limited user interaction. A pump identification code that uniquely identifies the insulin pump can be displayed on the diabetes managing device and insulin pump. The diabetes managing device can receive an insulin pump selection input that selects the pump identification code corresponding to the insulin pump. The diabetes managing device and insulin pump can generate and display a first verification string and second verification string, respectively. Confirmation inputs corresponding to the first verification string matching the second verification string can be received at both the insulin pump and the diabetes managing device such that a secure bidirectional communication link between the diabetes managing device and the insulin pump is established.

  • Publication number: 20120096451
Abstract: The present disclosure describes a handheld diabetes management device that implements a failsafe firmware upgrading protocol to reduce required user interaction and risk of device downtime. The general processing module executes first software from nonvolatile memory. The general processing module receives second software from an external port and writes the second software to the nonvolatile memory. Based on an upgrade signal, the general processing module switches execution from the first software to the second software, evaluates proper operation of the general processing module, and switches execution back to the first software from the second software when proper operation of the general processing module using the second software is not detected. A communications module, in electrical communication with the general processing module, stores third software and executes the third software.
