Publication number: 20110175484Abstract: Squirrel cage rotors of aluminum based material end rings joined with high conductive and durable material (such as copper) conductor bars for use in electric motors and methods of making them are described. The methods include forming conductor bars by casting or other metal forming methods in the slots of laminate steel stack, or positioning the preformed or premade solid conductor bars in the longitudinal slots of the stacked laminated steel, with bar ends extending out of the laminated steel stack ends, optionally coating the extended part of the conductors (bars) with a latent exoergic coating containing Al and one or more conductor bar chemical elements, positioning the laminated steel stack having conductors (bars) in a casting mold that forms the cavity of both end rings of the rotor, filling the end ring cavities with aluminum melt, and allowing the end rings to solidify under pressure. Alternatively, the conductor bars and end rings can be made separately and mechanically joined together.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 21, 2010Publication date: July 21, 2011Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS, INC.Inventors: Qigui Wang, Mark A. Publication number: 20110102767Abstract: A device for detecting lightning currents in a wind turbine comprises an inductive loop (1) for carrying a current representative of a lightning current and a sensitive element, such as a resistance or a piezoelectric element electrically connected to the inductive loop (1). The apparatus further comprises an optical fibre strain sensor mechanically connected to the sensitive element, such that, in use, a lightning current results in expansion of the sensitive element and the optical fibre strain sensor produces an optical signal indicative of the strain on the sensitive element due to the expansion. The device has the advantage that the optical signal from the optical fibre strain sensor can be processed by the same signal processing equipment that processes signals from other strain sensors provided on the wind turbine.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2009Publication date: May 5, 2011Inventors: Mark Volanthen, Mark Osborne, Glynn David Lloyd

Publication number: 20100243197Abstract: A rotor for an induction motor and a method of preparing same. The method includes making a squirrel-cage rotor made up of a cage and a laminate stack by forming a mold around the stack, heating the stack and introducing a molten metal into the mold such that the molten metal substantially fills a space defined in the stack that corresponds to the cage. In one form, the space includes slots or related channels formed in the stack that upon filling with the molten metal become longitudinal bars that form electric current loops with end rings of the cage. By heating the stack and maintaining it at a temperature high enough to keep the molten metal in a substantially molten state at least long enough for it to flow through the slots of the stack, premature freezing of the molten metal is avoided. In addition, by providing low pressure to the molten metal in conjunction with the elevated temperature in the stack, flow is promoted to ensure a substantially porosity-free, fully dense squirrel-cage for the rotor.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 24, 2009Publication date: September 30, 2010Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS, INC.Inventors: Mark A. Osborne, Barry L. Priem, Dale A. Gerard

Publication number: 20090237670Abstract: There is disclosed a prism for use in scanning applications such as total internal reflection microscopy in which the prism is translated relative to an incident light beam. A geometry is disclosed which cancels walk of the beam footprint at the base of the prism. Walk of the beam footprint due to irregularities in a largely planar sample surface located at the prism base are cancelled by coupling movement of the incident light beam to movement of the sample in the field of view of an objective lens, for example as part of an autofocus arrangement.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 6, 2009Publication date: September 24, 2009Inventors: Mark Osborne, Jason Bryant, Bojan Obradovic, Harold Swerdlow

Patent number: 7578336Abstract: A casting mold and method for its use to achieve in-mold modification of the casting metal is disclosed. One or more chambers are located within the casting mold's runner system. Each chamber can contain metallurgical modifiers for adjusting the chemical composition of the metal to improve the mechanical and physical properties of an article cast from the metal. One or more modifiers can be placed in the chamber(s) as the casting mold is assembled for use. As the melt is introduced to the casting mold, it passes through the chamber(s) and liquefies the modifier. Amounts of the liquid modifier, then, are carried away and become dispersed in the melt as it continues through the runner system and into the mold cavity. The metallurgical modifiers can be selected from any number of known additives or alloying elements, including strontium, among others.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2007Date of Patent: August 25, 2009Inventors: Kenneth George Stahl, Jr., Venkatramanan Srinivasan, James T. Singer, Edward C. Wall, Mark A. Osborne

Patent number: 7490142Abstract: Systems and methods for automatic client management authority assignment are described. In one aspect, it is determined that a network management point has not been configured for a client. Responsive to this, a directory service is requested to automatically assign a site code to the client. The automatically assigned site code identifies the management point through which the client can obtain management service(s).Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 2003Date of Patent: February 10, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Deepak Kumar, Kenneth Mark Osborne, Daniel N. Patent number: 7437441Abstract: The present disclosure relates to mapping, tracking, and distributing policy to client devices. Policy, in particular lists of policy assignments are sent to client devices. A determination is made as to the changes or deltas between policy assignments that have been sent to client devices and policy assignments that must be sent to client devices. Identifying the delta policy assignments avoids the need be sent to client devices. Identifying the delta policy assignments avoids the need to send policy assignments that have not change and do not need to be sent to client devices. A server computer determines applicability of policy assignments to particular client devices, tracks if and when policy assignments have been deleted and allows the client to either receive a partial list of policy assignments that are required to update policy or a full list of policy assignments. Full, partial or not list policy assignment depends when a particular client device was last provided a policy assignment.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2003Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Daniel N.
