    Abstract: A direct contact refrigeration system utilizes magnetic fluids, sometimes referred to as ferrofluids, in combination with a suitable refrigerant. The ferrofluid is separated from the refrigerant by magnetic means and circulated to the cooling load. At the same time, the evaporated refrigerant is compressed, condensed and then expanded into direct contact with the warmer ferrofluid returning from the cooling load.
