  • Patent number: 5781393
Abstract: A surge arrester which includes a pair of spaced metal electrodes and a semiconductor element interposed between the metal electrodes and in contact with at least one of the metal electrodes. The semiconductor element functions at least partially to bridge a gap between the metal electrodes with such gap serving as a current path between the metal electrodes in the event a voltage applied across the metal electrodes exceeds a firing voltage of the surge arrester. The semiconductor element includes a metal coating on at least a substantial portion of its outer surface which is in contact with the at least one metal electrode. The coating includes a gap between the electrodes and the gap may include a notch in the gap.

  • Patent number: 5545432
Abstract: Oxide thin films are deposited onto functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) which are bonded to various surfaces. The resulting oxide thin films have ordered, uniform densely packed crystalline structures.

  • Patent number: 5352485
Abstract: Iron and titanium oxide thin films are deposited onto functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) which are bonded to silicon or glass substrates. The resulting oxide thin films have ordered, uniform densely packed crystalline structures.

  • Patent number: 5298654
Abstract: Guanidine oxalate is used as a precipitating agent in the coprecipitation of multicomponent oxide powder precursors. A solution of a soluble inorganic salt is combined with a solution of guanidine oxalate. A resultant metal oxalate is precipitated from the solution and can thereafter be subjected to heat to convert the metal oxalate into a multicomponent ceramic powder.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 1, 1993
Date of Patent: March 29, 1994
    Assignee: Case Western Reserve University
Inventors: Mark R. DeGuire, Warren H. Philipp
