  • Patent number: 5916986
Abstract: A sterically-hindered monomer is used to make a polymer which in turn is useful in coating compositions. The resulting residue of the sterically-hindered monomer is present in the polymer, as well as in a cured coating (preferably an automotive coating) produced using a coating composition having the polymer therein. The presence of the residue of the sterically-hindered monomer imparts in the cured coating a resistance to environmental etching.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 20, 1996
Date of Patent: June 29, 1999
    Assignee: BASF Corporation
Inventors: Anna M. Budde, James A. Laugal, Walter H. Ohrbom, Marvin L. Green, Mark R. Montagne

  • Patent number: 5360644
Abstract: A coated article is described comprising a substrate having thereon a color-plus-clear composite coating wherein(a) the color layer of the composite coating is derived from a coating composition comprising:(1) a polymer component having active hydrogen-containing groups thereon,(2) an aminoplast curing agent,(3) an acid cure catalyst, and(4) an amine selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted pyridine or a substituted or unsubstituted N-alkyl primary amine, and(b) the clear layer of the composite coating is derived from a curable coating composition comprising an epoxy-functional component and an acid-functional or anhydride-functional component.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 15, 1992
Date of Patent: November 1, 1994
    Assignee: BASF Corporation
