Patent number: 11691260Abstract: A power tool is provided including a gear case having a spindle, a motor case connected to a rear end of the gear case along a longitudinal axis; a handle portion extending from a rear end of the motor case along the longitudinal axis; a motor housed inside the motor case; a fan in rotational connection with the motor; at least one air intake arranged at least one of the motor case or the handle portion near the rear end of the motor case; and a power module including power switches for driving the motor and a heat sink. The power module is housed in at least one of the motor case or the handle portion near the rear end of the motor case such that rotation of the fan causes air flow to enter through the air intake and flow near the heat sink and through the motor.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2021Date of Patent: July 4, 2023Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Joseph P. Kelleher, William F. Gallagher, Sean R. Templeton, Mark R. Poetzl, Seth M. Robinson, Marcell E. Coates, Madhur M. Purohit, Timothy J. Seeley, Joshua M. Lewis

Patent number: 10500708Abstract: A power tool is provided including a gear case having a spindle, a motor case connected to a rear end of the gear case, a handle portion attached to a rear end of the motor case, and a motor housed inside the motor case. The motor includes a stator, a rotor rotationally arranged inside the stator, and a fan in rotational connection with the rotor. At least one air intake is arranged at least one of the motor case or the handle portion near the rear end of the motor case. A power module including power switches and a heat sink is housed in at least one of the motor case or the handle portion near the rear end of the motor case such that rotation of the fan causes air flow to enter through the air intake and flow near the heat sink and through the motor.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 2016Date of Patent: December 10, 2019Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Joseph P. Patent number: 8434564Abstract: A power tool having a drive component and a housing. In one form, the drive component can be a transmission having a planetary stage with planet gears rotatably mounted on pins of a planet carrier. The pins are spaced circumferentially around the planet carrier such that each pair of adjacent pins is spaced apart by a spacing angle. At least two different spacing angles are employed. In another form, the drive component is selected from at least one of a motor, a transmission and a clutch and the housing is configured with first and second housing components and at least one set of mating conically-shaped features that can cooperate to align the housing components to an axis.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2012Date of Patent: May 7, 2013Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: David C. Tomayko, Qiang Zhang, Mark R. Poetzl, Stephen A. Debellius

Patent number: 8251158Abstract: A power tool with a housing, a transmission and a switch mechanism. The switch mechanism has an actuator, a rail, a switch and first and second springs. The actuator is non-rotatably but slidably coupled to the housing for movement along a longitudinal axis of the transmission between a plurality of positions to selectively engage one or more members of the transmission at each of the positions such that the transmission operates in one of a plurality of different overall speed ratios. The rail is fixedly coupled to the actuator and is received through the switch such that the switch is slidably mounted on the rail. The first and second springs are configured to bias the switch relative to the actuator in different directions.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2009Date of Patent: August 28, 2012Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: David C. Tomayko, Qiang Zhang, Mark R. Poetzl, Stephen A. Debellius
