  • Patent number: 4920537
Abstract: This invention comprises a method and apparatus for determining the bit error rate (BER) between two points of a digital communications circuit carrying an arbitrary data stream. Block check codes calculated at one point are compared with those calculated at the other. The block check codes are computed on blocks composed of samples of the data. The block size and sampling algorithm are chosen in such a way as to allow a statistically reliable BER result to be derived from the block check code miscompare information.
