  • Patent number: 5650891
Abstract: A data storage device for receiving a removable disk cartridge comprises first and second members movably mounted in the data storage device, each performing a respective function within the disk drive. A first spring coupled to the first movable member biases that member in a first direction. A second spring coupled to the second movable member biases that member in the same direction. A single, electro-mechanical device, which has a drive shaft capable of moving between extended and retracted positions, is mounted in the data storage device. The first and second movable members are arranged with respect to the drive shaft such that an operating end of the drive shaft engages and moves the second member a predetermined distance to an intermediate position of the drive shaft before engaging the first member.

  • Patent number: 5636085
Abstract: A magnetic read/write assembly for a flexible disk drive has rails with slots between the ends thereof. These slots provide an air bleed in the air bearing surface of the rails. The air bleed capacity of the slots, the width of the rails and the load force applied by flexures provide optimal width of the rails for stabilizing the media while maintaining a low fly height of the electro-magnetic elements on the media.

  • Patent number: 5617397
Abstract: A movable platform is mounted on opposing guide rails within a disk drive. A head actuator and spindle motor are mounted on the movable platform. The platform moves on the guide rails from a forward position to a rearward position upon insertion of a disk cartridge into the disk drive. As the platform moves toward the rearward position, the elevation of the platform changes in order to bring the spindle motor into engagement with the hub of the disk cartridge. A latch member is pivotally mounted on one of the guide rails for latching the platform in its forward position when the disk drive is not in use.
