  • Patent number: 8783229
Abstract: A gaseous fuel internal combustion engine includes an engine housing defining at least one cylinder, and an intake housing defining an intake passage fluidly connecting with the at least one cylinder. The engine includes a gaseous fuel delivery mechanism coupled with the engine housing and a distributed ignition promoting mechanism having a bead presentation device extending into the intake passage and configured to present a liquid bead of distributed ignition promoting material therein such as engine lubricating oil. During operation, gases passing through the intake passage dislodge the liquid bead from the bead presentation device and carry the distributed ignition promoting material into the cylinder for distributively igniting therein a mixture containing a gaseous fuel, air and the distributed ignition promoting material.

  • Patent number: 8082902
Abstract: A common rail fuel injection system includes a piezo intensifier fuel injector that includes a plurality of components. Among these are a needle valve member, an intensifier piston, a first piezo stack electrical actuator and a second piezo stack electrical actuator. These components have a first configuration at which the needle valve member blocks a nozzle outlet of the fuel injector, and a shoulder of the intensifier piston is exposed to fluid pressure in a common rail. The components have a second configuration at which the nozzle outlet is fluidly connected to the common rail for a low pressure injection event. The components have a third configuration at which the nozzle outlet is fluidly blocked from the common rail, but movement of the intensifier displaces fluid through the nozzle outlet for a high pressure injection event.

  • Publication number: 20070101968
Abstract: A fuel system for a work machine is disclosed. The fuel system has a fuel injector, a first source of fuel at a first pressure, a second source of fuel at a second pressure, and a pressure control device. The pressure control device is disposed between the fuel injector and the first and second sources. The pressure control device is configured to selectively direct the fuel at the first pressure and the fuel at the second pressure to the fuel injector.

  • Publication number: 20070102543
Abstract: A fuel injector for a work machine is disclosed. The fuel injector has nozzle member having at least one orifice and a needle valve element having a tip end. The needle valve element is axially movable to selectively allow and block fuel flow through the at least one orifice with the tip end. The fuel injector also has at least one supply passageway in communication with the tip end of the needle valve and a variable restrictive device disposed within the at least one supply passageway.

  • Publication number: 20070086899
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to variable discharge pumps, and specifically pumps used in fuel injection systems. Typically, such pumps include a dedicated spill control valve for each pumping plunger, that also doubles as an avenue for refilling the pumping chambers. This double duty results in compromise in the design of the spill control valve to operate effectively in both spill and fill modes. The present invention addresses these issues by utilizing a shuttle valve member to allow the spill function and the fill function to be addressed in separate passageways while also allowing a pair of plungers to share a common spill control valve. The present invention find particular application in pumps used to supply high pressure fluid to common rails for fuel injection systems.

  • Publication number: 20060202053
Abstract: The present disclosure provides a control valve assembly having at least one housing with a first and a second passage. First and second valve members are disposed at least partially within the housing, and in series. The first and second valve members are moveable between a first position to close fluid communications between the first and second passages and a second position to open fluid communications therebetween. The present disclosure further provides a fuel injector having an electronically controlled start of injection valve and an electronically controlled end of injection valve in series with the start of injection valve. A method is provided for controlling fluid flow in a fluid passage of a control valve assembly. The method includes commanding a change in position of a first electrically actuated valve member, and commanding the change in position of a second electrically actuated valve member prior to resetting the first electrically actuated valve member.

  • Publication number: 20060196974
Abstract: A fuel injector for a work machine is disclosed. The fuel injector has a nozzle member with at least one orifice and a needle valve element having a tip end and a base end. The needle valve element is axially movable to selectively allow and block fuel flow through the at least one orifice with the tip end. The fuel injector also has a control chamber in communication with the base end of the needle valve element. The control chamber has a sidewall portion radially disposed relative to the axial movement of the needle valve element. The fuel injector further has a port disposed in the sidewall portion of the control chamber and at least one passageway in communication with the port to selectively drain fuel from the control chamber, thereby initiating movement of the needle valve element.
