  • Patent number: 8858156
Abstract: A fragment containment assembly for a turbine is provided. The fragment containment assembly includes a plurality of bands disposed around a shroud of the turbine and positioned such that the shroud is disposed between blades of the turbine and the bands along radial directions outwardly extending from a shaft of the turbine. The bands include a material having a first modulus of toughness parameter that is greater than a second modulus of toughness parameter of the shroud at temperatures of at least 260 degrees Celsius. The bands are disposed around the shroud to prevent debris of the turbine from being released outside of the bands along the radial directions caused by failure of the turbine.

  • Publication number: 20130031902
Abstract: Various methods and systems are provided for an engine. In one example, the system includes a two-stage turbocharger which has first turbocharger with a first turbine and a first compressor and a second turbocharger with a second turbine and a second compressor, where the first turbine and the second turbine are arranged in parallel and the first compressor and the second compressor are arranged in series. The system may include a duct coupling turbine inlets of the first and second turbine, and a valve coupled between the duct and the inlet of the first turbine to throttle flow to first turbine.

  • Publication number: 20110307127
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for operating a vehicle including an engine comprising a turbocharger including a compressor and a turbine. The engine further includes a bypass path configured to selectively route gas from downstream of the compressor to upstream of the turbine. In one embodiment, the method comprises selectively increasing gas flow to the engine by adjusting gas flow through the bypass path from downstream of the compressor to upstream of the turbine. In this manner, the performance of the engine may be adjusted for various operating conditions.
